I need help, I can't decide whether to go with a 300 win mag or a 375 h&h. I want a rifle I can take any game with and I want it to last. I really like the remington 700 stainless/synthetic but I can't decide on witch caliber.I will be hunting primarily in North America but am planning a trip to Africa in the next few years. I need accurracy, reliability, and most importantly, availibility.

Are you planning to hunt Dangerous Game in Africa? Cape Buffalo or Lion if so the .375 is the minimum required by law. If only Leopard then both would work. Plains game only then between that and North America(unless you are considering a Grizz or Brown Bear anytime soon)a .300 win mag would suffice.

The chambering will be 375 H&H if you intend takeing dangerous game in Africa, so that part is setteled! The above is, if you only intend takeing one rifle to Africa. The 300 Win Mag, and the 375 H&H make a good combination for Africa. IMO one should never go 20,000 miles from home, and risk a $20,000 hunt on one rifle!

Now! We come to your other considerations. Accuracy, RELIABILITY and Most importantly availability. [Confused] I'm confused by your most "important" choice! IMO, the most important feature would be RELIABILITY for a rifle you might depend on to preserve your life! That being said your choice of the Remington Mod 700 wouldn't be my first choice, being a pushfeed action. The 700 has accuracy to spare usually, and the 375 H&H is available in any country in the world, where hunting is allowed, but then, so is the 300 Winchester Mag.
I would look very closely at the CZ 550 in 375 H&H. It is a true magnum action, it is control round feed, and is very reasonably priced. It is, IMO, a far better rifle, than anything out of the Big Green plant! Alternitively, if you want to spend a little more money, I would look into the Ruger EXPRESS rifle, in the same chambering. The 375 H&H is a good choice for a one rifle for the world, but both of the above are available in one of the 416 mags as well, and this coupled with the 300 Win Mag you could "SAFELY" hunt anything in the world, without worry one!

A rifle used for dangerous game should have a couple things without fail:

#1 It should be a control feed action

#2 It should have a fireing pin blocking safety.

#3 It should have aquality set of iron sights.

#4 It should have a quality low powered scope mounted in quick detacth mounts.

#5 It should be legal to hunt dangerous game.

The minimum is 9.3mm in all but Tanzania, where the 375 H&H is minimum. None of the 300s or 338s is legal for dangerous game in Africa other than Leopard, and Lion! Again in all but Tanzania.

Hope any of this helps! [Smile]

Even if you do not plan to hunt Africa, the 300 win can give you trouble with respect to Alaska. Some of the Alaskan guides who show up at SCI want their clients carrying a minimum of a 338 win. for brown bear. If a guy shows up with something smaller, they stop at Wal Mart so that he can buy a suitable rifle before the hunt starts.
