Karl,

I thought you sold your 585.

Actually cast and paper patch interest me the most. I am quite keen on the straight case as I have owned three 458 M70s in the past. A 458 Lott was on the agenda but somehow (at least for me) it did not go with Wby rifles whereas the 550 being a straight case on the 460 is perfect.

My money goes off to America on Thursday our time for the 550 Magnum.

As near as I can tell the 550 is probaly the best Big Banger over the 460 Wby when brass, practicality, excessive power, straight case advantages etc. is thrown into the equation and being on a straight case on the 460 is just right for a Weatherby action. All seems to fit together.

Karl,

This could be a good big banger for you, would be real easy to do on a CZ 416.

Mike,

If the 550 would have been available back then I would never have worried about 585. But I'll stick to only one money eater in this class of rifle

Actually on that note I reckon the 550 may see higher power use on average than the 585's etc. when you consider all the bullshit hassles with brass for the latter.

What loads do you anticipate settling on- High power as you can go with focus on accuracy?

A custom Wby rifle?

The thought makes me dizzy.

Please remind me of the dimensions of the brass for the .550 mag, and who is making the brass for it.

Personally the reason I did not pursue the .550 was bullet availability.

If someone can think of some huge objection then let me know. It is 2.30am Thursday morning here and I am going to bed soon. But about midday I am heading to the bank and post office.

Mike, I just read the .550 mag home page and I think you should get one.

Since you asked for input , I also feel obligated to mention that it would be more in keeping with the herd to build this rifle on a mauser style action such as the cz550 than the wby. The advantage of keeping with the herd is that if you want to sell the rifle, you will get more for it.

If everyone goes with the herd and Mike is only one
with 550 MAG on a WEA, that makes him ""THE MAN"".
Nothing wrong with that.Ed.

I looked at the page and it had a section on cast bullet molds from LEE for $120. You might look into www.mountainmolds.com
They will make almost anything and the price is less for a custom mold. He made the custom 500gn mold for my 470 and it was around $65. They work great and are a high quality option.
In the US do you have to get the BATF exemption for a non-destructive weapon?
Looks like lots of fun to me.

500 Grains,

Weatherby and not CZ for a couple of reasons and including not wanting to be one of the herd.

In the past when I have had Wby and either M70 or Rem 700 at the same time I have always found the Wby and 2 lug actions very awkward to move between. Everything here will be Wby. I am getting a big box to catch the bolt handles as they fall off

If I get sick of the 550 then with the Wby the 550 barrel comes off and I have an action and stock but with the CZ I have noting that I want.

Actually, in Australia if I was to sell a 550 Magnum then I think it would be much easier to sell on a Mark V and bring more money as well. A couple of reasons (I think?). In Australia the CZ is seen basically as a piece of shit. This is probably because CZs are much cheaper here when compared to M70s and Rem 700s. Also someone with a 378 or 416 or 460 Mark V would be a natural buyer for the 550 on a Mark V.

Mike, I gave mine to my brother but still work on it myself. I will get another but nothing too similar in power.

Do you know what weight bullet Woodeligh will be turning out, and whether it is soft or solid?

Karl, what work do you continue to do on your .585?

Mike, to carry those .550 cartridges you can get yourself a 28 gauge shotgun belt that holds 25 rounds. That would make for a busy night of 'roo shooting.

500,

It might also make for a big headache and very stiff neck the next day

Karl,

Woodleigh makes nothing but Hawk is doing 600 grains and I think 700 grains and with the thin roo busting jackets but for my use I see the 550 being mainly a gas check bullet or paper patch bullet calibre.

Has anyone in the US made one? Did you have to get the ATF sporting exclusion? Was it a PITA to do?

PC,

I think I will need a Corporal Trading stock and I think you said he makes a Wby duplicate.

My thoughts at the moment are to get a 30/378 Synthetic since they are matte blued action and also buy the all steel bottom metal. Fit the 550 barrel and then a Corporal Trading stock as the 550 barrel will be to big for the Wby Synthetic stock. However, the Wby synthetic stock can be used on one of the 378s for when rough conditions are on the agenda Then if the 550 is all OK then send it down to Ross Waghorn for a stock, say a duplicate of a Wby Euromark while at the same time it would have its Corporal Trading stock for rough and dirty conditions.

Mike,

corporal trading does make a weatherby style stock I have this on both my .416 & .585 although the .416 Rigby with the weatherby stick does give me a funny sensation. That is why I will eventually buy a second .416 cz with my beloved hogsback left on it

Alan is good to deal with and I have had a few long conversations with him and no doubt you will to mate

Here is a stock we are going to use as a pattern. It still needs shaping and is oversized.

I will follow up with some pictures when final shaping is done.
