stainlesses are OUT, dont bother mentioning them

I am thinking that sae 4340 would be the best of all possible worlds, to machine and then to harden.

I am thinking of a 4340 action and a monoblock that the barrels screw into....

probably going to use the browning bss as a basis, adding material and swells to suit my tastes...

I figure I'll cut the "first" prototype from some coldroll just to determine how frickin hard it'll be to get it right... or delrin

of course it'll be 470, if i ever get it done

jeffeosso,
You might find that 4340 isn't too aweful fun to work with. 4140 is easier to work worth, and from a practical standpoint offers essentially the same performance. Having said that though, I would personally use SAE 1340 (second pick SAE1330). SAE1340 possesses the tensile strength of the SAE4140 and SAE4340 series, or very nearly so, and provides significantly higher impact strengths. Hardenability is a wash between them. You realize that to harden any of these materials you will either need to induction harden them, or through harden and draw back.

You could also use SAE 8620 or SAE 1320 or SAE4320 and case carburize. Superior impact strength to the above materials, but with a potentially lower tensile strength. An even better case carburizing steel is DIN spec 17CrNiMo6. It is available from Timken, here in the States.

Good luck with you endeavors.

Is that a single tigger or double trigger system?

there's MANY hardening places in houston... i think 5 or 6 that i think would take the action after it's done...

i want 2 triggers.. please don't tell me the bss only has one...

i found that, when making knives, o1 toolsteel cuts more or less like a tough plastic, until it's hardened ... then you can't get a file to cut it.

these are in the whacked out, stupid part of dreaming... but i think if i make enough chips, i'll give up and buy one from butch

I've never seen a BSS with two triggers but I have not seen them all. I would be very surprised if they made them though. A lot of SxS's for the US market at that time (SKB, BSS, many American "styled" Spanish guns). Of course the old standby Savage 311 had two....

I have a Ugartechea SxS 12 gauge slug gun that is a kick to shoot. It is regulated amazingly well at 50 yards with original Brenneke 1 oz slugs. You'd have a lot of fun with it Jeffe, works like a hammer on hogs too. Your project sounds fun.

I've had very good luck with Sae4140 steel. Both from a machinability standpoint and from experiences in hardening. You really don't need anything more exotic for the purposes of making an action. Jeffe- the easiest way to cut out that action will be using EDM. -Rob

Per your request on another thread, let me be the first to say GIVE UP ON MAKING YOU OWN DOUBLE RIFLE.
Save your money..go to the credit union.
Buy a "factory" double rifle in the calibre of your choice. It will be money well spent and cheaper in the long run. Just MY OPINE. [Wink]

thanks guys...
I think what i am going to do is go buy a plug of 4130 (about 70-80 bucks) and SEE how badly i screw it up... i figure 30-100 hours of mill and lathe time I'll be thoroughly disgusted with my lack of skill and give it up

70-80 bucks and a 10 pack of cutters....

Jeffe, you keep at this now. Make sure you post all the details and progress reports. Some of us really are interested. Besides, I have a BSS just wasting space in the cabinet. - Dan
