Jack Lott's stopper stock article
For those that are interested, it was published in the 1984 Gun Digest.

Hopefully one of the copies I'm sending out will get scanned, and e-mailed around.

I'd like to burn copies for all, but am still trying to get caught up with work after the holidays.

I'm curious, will a laminated stock still require the cross bolts, or is it strong enough, being laminated, that it won't need them? ~~~Suluuq

Paul, thanks for posting the article. Especially that VanHorn rifle. I've a few 14/17 Enfields that need to be turned into something useful, and that gave me some ideas. Thanks again. - Dan

Good article. Thanks.

Rusty Gunn, I'd have to say that depends on how well the glue penetrates the wood, and how strong it is in tension. Another way to say "splitting" is "tension perpendicular to the grain", and wood is weak in that direction. If the glue doesn't penetrate the wood completely, you'd still have a weak spot where there is no glue. If the glue does penetrate completely, any increase in splitting resistance would depend on the glue/wood combo's strength in tension perpendicular.

Which is a fancy way of saying "maybe".

Suluuq,

It depends on what caliber you are contemplating. On your 375 whelen, I'd expect a stong laminated stock to hold up ok. On a 458 lott and up, I'd want both a cross bolt, and a second barrel recoil lug.

PS, did you look into getting that book?
