I picked up a Browning 375 H&H from another forum member & wanted to get some thoughts on what scope to mount on the gun? Also I wanted to go with detachable mounts, any thought on what I should be looking at or what to stay away from? Thanks for the help!

A scope with good eye relief mounted in either Talley or Warne QD's. No need for a high magification scope on a 375...others will disagree with this. Scope choice should be based on how you are going to use the gun. Is it for blasting or hunting? Is it for prey animals or is some sort of 'nasty critter' in its actual (not 'pie-in-the-sky') future? If it has no iron sights, you do not need a QD mount, just a detachable mount with decent RTZ. In that case, the Leupold QR (or QRW if you prefer Weaver-type setups) will work nicely; I use the Leupold QRs on my Model 70 .375H&H. I like the Talley mounts a lot; whether you want to spend the extra money to get them is up to you. George

I would consider having 2 scopes fitted in a very high quality QD mount. I always travel with my scopes off the rifles in my carry on luggage. I would have one scope in the 1-6 range, with an illuminated reticle, for hunting big stuff up close, and then a scope in the 2 to 10 range with an illuminated reticle for longer range shooting, and light gathering for leopard/lion over bait. The illuminated reticle on my 1.5-6x42 Swarovski proved very handy on my last trip. DOUBLE RIFLE SHOOTERS SOCIETY

I've had good luck with both Talleys and QR Leupolds. A .375 should have some iron sights as well in my opinion. A shot not taken is always a miss

The gun does have iron sites, that is why I'd like a detachable scope mount. I've got Leupold scopes on 3 other rifles & really like there performance, but have always wanted a Swarovski (I was thinking a 1x6x36 or just a 3x9x40). I need to get down to the gun shop & see what we can do. Thanks for all the help!

I recently scoped a M70 375H&H with a leupold VXIII 1.5 X 6. I called leupold about which bases and rings they suggested. I got their QD system but ran out of vertical adjustment on sighting in. I called leupold about my problem and they sent a shim to place under the base. I did not particularly like this solution so I ordered a set of Talley QD rings and bases and the problem was solved with no shim and plenty of adjustment left. I would go with the Talley.

I put a set of Warne QD rings and a Titan 1.5-6 on my Whitworth 375H&H. Rings work great. As usual just my $.02 Paul K

is there a scope for under $200 that will hold up to the recoil of a 375 H-H?

If you do some searches you'll find lots of thoughts on scopes for 375's. One good inexpensive one is the Nikon Monarch 2-7 32. at about $300. "shoot quick but take your time"

The Tasco Titan is a 30mm scope that a lot of posters have used for 375s and up. Price $135-150. I have one and love it. As usual just my $.02 Paul K

_____ These need to be answered. The .375 H&H is a 350 yard shooter (easily) and that's a loooong ways for most folks (me, too), no lecture meant or intended. I have the facility access and shoot mine out to 600 yds. and that's lobbing them into there like a "Hail Mary" football throw. But it's fun with friends. It'll do it from up close to way out there. Your needs and use will determine the scope, etc. Mine is a 1.5 x 6 Nikon Gold, 30 mm, with Talley QD mounts and peep sight attachment. It works. The second is a Sightron w/multiplex and Talley QD's. It goes back to zero either way, repeatedly. About 450 rounds to date and counting. She's a bitch and I luv'er. I trust her. Either way - dont go too cheap on your scope and be lured by the "sirens". Don't do it. Have fun and enjoy her. Good luck. DB

Dungbettle, I'll be using the 375 for mostly close to modertate range shoots (50 to 150 yards), or atleast that's what I'm buying it for, still need to get it to the range & see what it can do. I've got 2 rifles I like to shoot distance with 7mm Rem Mag & a 270 Wby mag. I bought the 375 for a bear hunt in Alaska, an Alberta Bison hunt & maybe/hopfully one day Africa.

In that case, I recommend a Leupold VX-III 2.5x-8x or 1.75x-6x (depending upon your preference). George

Leupold QR mounts and a 1.5 X 5 or 1.75 X 6 Leupold scope.

As the heretic of the bunch, I have a 6 power Cabela's Pine Ridge on my 375, and have put about 300 rounds thru the gun with this scope, hunting Musk-Ox, Elk, and Whitetail Deer. The scope is still just as clear and on as the day I mounted it. I will shut-up now. Even the rocks don't last forever.

The 1.75-6x is perfect for the .375. The six power is plenty on the upper end for 300 yards plus and working up loads on paper. The 1.75x is great in the brush up close. A versatile rifle needs a versatile scope and this is it, and besides the 6x is plenty to practice on coyotes, does, etc. Anything that's big enough to need a .375 is too far away if you can't see it through a 6x scope. I like the German type No. 4 reticle for the same reasons, easy to use in the brush up close, fine enough for long shots. I also have one with a 2-7x Nikon Monarch on it and it has held up well, too. A shot not taken is always a miss

Well, I used to think that too but the .375 has largely won me over... With a moderately pointy 270gr bullet, the trajectory of my .375 does (to any sane big game hunting range) is so similar that my 7mm Rem mag mostly stays in the gun safe. The trajectory difference isn't that much... The .375 does a lot less meat damage too. I have to admit that it took some practice to be able to shoot it prone 'in cold blood' without a flinch, but I was fine after less than 100 rounds. You won't go wrong with a 2.5-8x Leupold (my .375 wears one) or some other low-mid power scope. Keep your scope light to avoid the mounting problems of heavy scopes with heavy recoil. John
