Anyone used these rifles before? How good are they?

They're quite highly regarded..it's really a lack of knowledge that keeps the prices low on the used gun market.

The first big Weatherbys (378) were built on S&L. It was also am interrupted locking lug design. I don't care particularly for any rear lock up in calibres larger than a Hornet but I do own a few (rear lock up). S&L is to the best of my knowledge quite highly regarded but I've not seen them here. What model is ot you are looking at? There is some information in Frank de Haas' book on the older models.

I owned and used M60, cock on closing, and M65, cock on opening, S&L rifles for many years. The M60 was owned by my father before me and my M65 was purchased from another hunter who shot a huge amount of animals before retiring. A hunting friend of mine also used a M65 for decades too. All these rifles were chambered for the 7x61 S&H cartridge. These rifles are the smoothest operating and most accurate I have ever used, heavy and with a 26" barrel they were a magnificent rifle when chambered in the 7x61 cartridge. They did not have interrupting threads on the bolt lockup but had four massive lugs at the rear with a short 60 degree bolt lift. The rear locking bolt in a tubular action with minimum cutouts for the ejection port and magazine well provided for a very smooth and strong lockup. The rear lockup was stronger than most rifles on the market and has been tested to very high pressures. The belted 7x61 case gave no more problems when reloading than any other belted case, just head-space on the shoulder as you should for the belted cases. I only sold mine to get a lighter rifle for when my kids started shooting and have regretted that decision ever since. The S&L are truly magnificent rifles with accurate and fast barrels and superb factory triggers.
