Blooded the 416 AR
sorry, no pics... batteries DOA.

was out hunting pigs with Rocky last night, who, btw, is an excellent bow and boar hunter. He got a ~170 class boar with a highly reworked enfield #1

I, however, didn't do so well. The pigs didn't cooperate, but a big ole boar COON was eating all my corn!!

btw, speer magtips at 2550 (350 grains) will field strip a racoon at ~65 yards... exit wound looked like a partial skinning!!!

At least you were ready for that coon if he charged. I hate it when that happens.

Did you feel safe using a non-premium bullet? You know, even though WDM Bell killed his coons with a 7 mm Mauser, you shouldn't tackle your coons with anything under a .458. Personally, I think that a double is better for coon, because of the quick follow up second shot. With a bolt gun, you might not have time to work the action in the event of a charge in thick cover ...

Oh, well, photos would have looked like roadkill anyway.

Spotlighting coons from a blind with a bait of "roastin' ears" can be good practice for leopard. Wink

Skinner.
I'll tell you what, coons can be tough to kill. I caught about 2500 or so in leghold traps and by far they're the toughest to kill of all the furbearers. Shoot a coyote, fox or bobcat in the ear with a 22 short hp and you can hear the thud when they hit the ground stone cold dead. With a coon the shot needs to be placed just right or it can deflect on the cranial ridge and just knock em out.

I've had them come back to life on me at times, like in the back of my truck which had a shell on it and one jumped up front with me and the dog while we were stopped at a traffic light in town.

If coons grew to be 500 lbs. you'd need that 416.

Nope, coons are nasty mothers. And if they weighed 500 lbs. you'd probably want a double to go after one tossing your trashcan around the yard. Big Grin

That's what the 45-70 was made for.

Well jeffe, at least first blood for your 416AR out weighed the copperhead I shot with my 458 Lott.
