I have a Remington 798 in .458 Winchester in the safe and I have never taken it to the range, have a few questions about it that I'm not sure where to post, but I guess this is a good a place to start as any! First, I'm thinking about putting a peep site on it (will probably just be a range rifle), so does anyone make a good peep site for this rifle (I've never had one before, so I'm ignorant when it comes to them, as well)? Also I've had friends show me how to reload metallic cartridges before, and I would like to reload for this rifle, any tricks or quirks to loading the .458? The biggest gun I've played with is my .375, so I'd like to start off at the lower end of the .458, maybe loading it down to .45-70 velocities...any suggestions as to a good load/online loading manual that I could use for reference? Thanks in advance guys, this rifle will be a few firsts for me so I need all the help I can get!

Williams Gun Sights makes the FP and WGRS peeps for the 798 AKA Interarms Mark X, Interarms Whitworth, Charles Daly and Zastava. The rifle is a large ring mauser. Can't help with reloading but Wisconsin Cartridge Corp and Hunting Shack Munitions both make slightly reduced loads using non-premium bullets starting at ~$2.00/round. Look forward to pics and a range report.

The Williams sights can be had without knobs which streamlines them nicely. I bet you'll get that thing out in the woods now and then.

You might try the Cast Boolits Forum, also, for using lead bullets loaded down-

I walked away from a 798/458 and regret it. Would have found the same use for it you have.

The Williams Gun Sight’ WGRS Receiver Sight, a windage and elevation adjustable peep sight, is likely the cleanest installation of the various options; here’s a link to the site from Brownell’s:

Will a Lyman 48 not work?

Here's a couple of threads for my first .458 experience. Here and here.

Reloading for this is like any other straight wall cartridge. You'll be motivated to reload simply because of the cost of big bore ammo. But reloading is a pretty complicated undertaking initially. Buy a couple of loadings manuals and read them a few times. The Lyman is good to start.

For my 798, I put on a Weaver rear scope base and installed a NECG rear aperature sight. The front sight need to come up to match though.

Thanks, guys, I guess I'm gonna start stocking up on cheap .458's and look into those peep sites! Should be fun and I'll post a range report after I get a chance to do some shooting!

It will take an old Redfield, Lyman, for the FN or 98 Mauser I suspect...Williams is my choice of Receiver sights and inquistive hands cant turn the adjustments..For dangerous game on a 458 Win. I can't think of a better sight than a Williams Fool Proof..

Some gunscribe put out the word, and it became almost the " golden word" that Williams were aluminum and wouldn't hold up under field conditions and it has been quoted on the internet blogs...

IMO that's a bunch of internet and gunscribe crap, I don't know of a single failure in my life time and never talked to anyone that has had a failure, talked to a couple that knew old Joe that lived next door to Hymie who had a brother that to whats his face that broke one (probably with a hammer)....

They walk among us you know! shocker
