It would be a toss up between the 416 rem mag and 458 Lott. Since I currently have a Lott, and not a rem mag, the Lott would win.

Neal,

I think this statement will ultimately answer your "useless questions".

What big bore caliber would you select for 90%+ of your hunting? The answer may well be NONE. It is up to your preferences not mine.

#5
Is the question designed for a cartridge/caliber that you think you might be able to shoot?

Or is the question designed for a cartridge/caliber that you can repeatable shoot minute of angle or less?

#6
Is the question designed for a rested shot?

Or is the question designedfor a off hand shot?

#7
Is the cartridge/caliber designed for a carefull broadside or frontal shot?

Or is the cartridge/caliber designed to penetrate from any angle?

OK, lets see if anyone else can add any useless Questions to a useless question!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I say useless because most of us that live in the real world that actuall go hunting and actuall kill animals actually have to use what ever gun we own and that we have shot enough to place our shots into the game and make a clean kill and have had time to pick the right bullet to get the job done and can hit what we are aiming at.

Make mine a 450 Watts and it is dead!

If I was only going to use one rifle for my hunting, the rifle would be a medium bore. More versatile.

Depending upon the general max shooting range, say 250 yards and the type/weight/attitude of animals hunted, I would go with either a 9.3x62 or a .338-06. I have one of the latter.

If I kept with the spirit / intent of the question, it would be a .404 Jeffrey.

I am a bit recoil shy and do not like being bashed around the face / shoulder. My .375H&H is about my limit in a 9.5lb scope sighted rifle.
