Can the .470 Nitro Express be loaded to fire a 600 grain bullet at 2150 to 2200 fps range? This cartrigde would be fired in a rebarreled Ruger No. 1. Thanks.

Sure could.

Here is the Hodgdon data to start with, then work up to your Ruger No.1 higher velocities:

600gr Barnes Original RNSP

H1000/110.0gr/1844 fps
H1000/115.0gr/1933 fps

H4831/100.0gr/1827 fps
H4831/105.0gr/1941 fps

Layne Simpson load for same bullet:
IMR7828/103.0gr/1936 fps

I would start with 90 grains of H4350 and expect to reach goal at somewhere around 100 grains. Haven't done it, but if I had a Ruger No.1 so chambered, I probably would.

I do have a Ruger No.1 in .500A2 that gets 2150 to 2200 fps with 700 to 750 grainers using IMR4350 at 110 to 115 grains.

I will be switching over to H4350 next time I load that one.

Yes, BUT barrels set for the .470 NE had a relatively slow twist. YOu will want a faster twist to stabilize the 600 grain bullet. Try 1:10 if you can get it.

recoilpad,
As an after thought Wink you really ought to consider a 10" twist McGowen barrel. I have one on my .470 Capstick. I also used his 10" twist on the 500A2's and a .404 Jeffery, all with superb results.
Harry McGowen ought to be a bigger name than he is.

As another afterthought, the 470 NE is about the same case capacity as the 470 Mbogo.

I think 105 grains of H4350 will get you close to 2200 fps with 600 grainers in a 470 Mbogo, so it probably would in the Ruger No.1 chambered in 470 NE.

As an after-afterthought: Why use 600 grainers at all?

Use the many great 500 grainers with 105 grains of RL-15 and get around 2500 fps???

That would be better. No filler needed. I would still go with the faster twist.thumb

Edit: !!!WARNING: Don't allow your ammo to get near any of those flimsy double rifles! Wink

Butch Searcy used to regulate his 470 doubles with 108 gr of 4831 with 500 grain Woodleighs at 2250 FPS. He now regulates with 105 grains 4831 with 500 grain Woodleighs at 2150 FPS. No filler needed.

If you are going to use a 600 gr. bullet then go to the 500 or larger...The 470 has never performed well with 600 gr. bullets, they tend to tip and not penitrate as well, perhaps they take too long to stabilize, maybe due to twist or the length of the bullet.

Dangerous Dave,
This rifle is still in the "dream" stage. I would like to have a .475 caliber and a Ruger No. 1 would probably be the most affordable for me. I am trying to decide which .475 caliber to use. Currently my biggest bore is .458 and it is in a Ruger No.1. It is a .450 Rigby. I like thet Ruger No.1 and I like the classic cartridges.

Thumpper470,
The load I got from Butch was with RL-15. I think 89g but not sure without checking my notes. This load did use filler. Any Idea why he changed loads?

Roscoe, he didn't like the filler and 4831 will do the job sans filler.

Thumper 470,
When did Butch start regulating doubles with 105 grs. of IMR-4831 and why? Mine is regulated with 108 and it has never given me a problem other than it kicks the snot out of me..It will also come to same POI with 85 grs. of RL-15 and 5 grs. of dacron at 2020 FPS, a much nicer load and kills Buffalo just as well...

After asking for the serial number of my rifle, Butch sent me data for 500 grain Woodleighs with IMR-4831 (no filler) and with RL-15 (with filler), as well as a load for cast projectiles and XMR-5744.

My rifle is regulated for the heavy load and I have to agree with Ray that it is "exciting" to shoot.

Have tried Ray's 85 gr RL-15 load with 5 grains of Dacron and it shoots sufficiently well that I'd be happy to use it (abt 1 1/2" at 50 yards). Might be better as I'd shot a number of rounds that day.

I suspect that Butch may have dropped the load for regulation simply because it was not necessary to enjoy that much recoil in the field. Sounds reasonable to me.

Ray, I don't know why other than it gets closer to the Federal load which is less than 2100FPS. Butch started just a few months ago.
