What big bore caliber could/would you build on it? I have reservations about building a modern magnum (65,000psi)cartridge rifle on a 03A3 action.

Would it accommodate a 404J or 458WM? What problems are there in opening up the bold face and magazine box and rails? Kudude

Here was my solution to this question. It is a great set up.

When I was a kid one of the first gun magazine articles I ever read (other than those found in my Grandfather's Outdoor Life) was the story of a fella who put together a 16 inch, 6-15/16 pound 1903A3 in 458 Winchester Magnum.

Depends on the hassle you want to go through. If you don't want to open up the bolt face ... go to a 30-06, 338-06, 35 Whelen, or 9,3x62.

If you're willing to open up the bolt face then .308 Normal Mag, .338 WM, or .358 Norma Mag come to mind.

I have a Springfield as you describe in .308 Norma Mag and love it.

As I already have a .338 Win Mag, a 9,3x62, two .375 H&Hs, a .416 Rigby already and a .458 AR in progress ... I'd probably do a 30-06 which (believe it or not) I don't have.

It would have to be a 35 Whelen, with a 10" twist.

kudude, might consider Rugers new offering in 07-beltless. boltface, perhaps rail work, trigger, stock, some brass, bulets and shoot! sounds good.

I have a P-17 waiting to get turned into a big bore. So if I had an '03/A3 I think I would turn it into something like a .338/06. I like Rich's idea of a .35 Whelen too.

MJ,
I saw that lovely thing earlier, and gave it some serious thought particularly since I'd have a reason to visit the area. My son and his family live in New Braunfelds.

Potential problems: mine is a 03A3, so the rear bridge isn't quite the same; however, because I have old eyes, I've give some thought to pulling the scope mount and going back to a peep. Kudude

I'd build a 400 Whelen (Improved) on the action.

I just used that caliber in Tazania, and liked it a lot.

Other than a new barrel, it shouldn't require any other work.
