I have a custom 500 Jeffery. It is a 1935 Chilean contract action. I shoot it fairly well off the sticks and bench especially when I take my time to aim properly. I think it might benefit from a Lyman 35 Peep sight to ease the acquisition of moving game. Do you think a peep would enhance the performance of this rifle enough to justify inletting this sight it into the left side of the stock thus ruining the clean lines if you should take you take the peep off? square shooter

Very important question. You have a very special rifle. How would the rear sight look when looking thru the apperature at the front sight? I would guess since your rifle is custom you have a fixed standing rear. Does the fixed standing rear interfere with your sight picture using the Lyman 35 apperature sight, this would be an important consideration to me. The apperature(peep) sight is a big advantage over an open sight for precision shooting but not necessarily for moving game at close ranges. I would probably not modify my rifle to install the Lyman 35. I would consider a low power long eye relief light weight scope in Talley rings. The .500 Jeffery/.500 Schuler Jumbo/12.7x70 Schuler is a fantastic chambering.

Before you do this, you ought to drop an email to Shakiri, aka Steve Robinson, who is a PH who frequents here. He has a 500 Jeffery, not sure which action, with a home made peep that is excellent - at least in photos - and doesn't require messing with your rifles so much. I believe he made the sight and when he found the correct height, he Permanemtlay attached it to the rear bridger. JPK Free 500grains

I found that on my rifle, when you changed from Woodleigh round nose to GS customs, the height dynamics on the rear sight were considerable. With the 35 height adjustments can easily be accounted for and locked down. I also use very hard cast gas checked bullets for practice and those could be made easier to shoot with an easier to adjust rear peep. I have little experience with that peep but it looks doable to me and far easier than with any other peep I have seen. square shooter

Have you looked at the peep sights by XS? I think they are better for your application for two reasons. First, I believe that they are more durable as they mount directly to the top of the receiver. The Lyman mounts to the side and the aperture is on an unsupported arm. Second, the XS would not require the stock to be altered. The two downsides to the XS are that it is ugly, and that it requires the charger hump to be altered. An option that cures both ills is to have a custom base built for the XS. For quite some time I have been thinking about having a custom base made that would follow the lines of the original Mauser rear square bridge. My idea was not to make a fake bridge, but rather to have a bolt on base that more or less follows the look of a rear square bridge, but accepts a slide, aperture stem and windage screws of the similar to the XS. Also, you could sight in with your two loads then mark the stem, or just remember how many turns are required to get the elevation correct for each load. Kevin "Doctari" Robertson told me that he has installed a peep sight on his Dumolin .505 Gibbs. I believe that it was Danie Joubert, Pretoria, SA that did the job.

These are great ideas. I have looked at the ashley outdoors peep for weaver bases but not sure how much elevation could be achieved. Has anyone ever used the Lyman 35 for hunting????? square shooter

You could look at the Williams WGRS aperture sight. I had a custom base made for my 404 jeffery so I could use this set-up. Plenty of easy elevation and windage adjustment with built in hash marks for easy repeatability. I have found that with the one setting for the aperture I can use a cast lino GC bullet at a plinking 1900fps and a serious 2435fps with the Woodleigh soft and RWS solid only needing a change of front blade which only takes a few seconds to acomplish. Windage is unafected. If you wanted to remove the aperture you could leave the base on, a simple and effective cure-all. You could always go to the bolt mounted aperture and it is only the changine of the cocking piece to return it to origional. This was often the way early on. The sight can be wound up for long shots whith the option of a quick wind down for using the express sights in the thick stuff. Von Gruff.

I have hunted with an older best quality Lyman apperature sight. The Lyman was mounted on a FN Mauser chambered in .30-06. I can't remember if it was a Lyman 48 or Lyman 53. I don't beleive it was a 35 but it would have been as the same quality of the 35. My idea was to use this rfle in heavy cover on whitetail. I shot the rifle quite a bit on the range and had a lot of fun with it, however, I never found the field success I was hoping for. I stopped using hunting apperatures and just used the threaded apperature housing as a ghost ring for improved sighting in low light. I finally went to a scope.

I intended to use the Lyman 35 as a ghost ring sight. I had one on a Mauser in 270 and took it off to use on the 500. I never shot that 270 and should have to see how well the entire show worked. square shooter
