Ruger 77 458 to 458 Lott ????
The question at hand is a fairly simple one -- at least I thought so----- buuuuuuut --- my mad scheme was to obtain a Ruger 77 458 with the tang safety and have it re-chambered to 458 Lott -- however local smithy says no cigar - action is not long enough -- since I am new to both the Ruger world and also the 458 Lott pain team I am lost on this one -- help!

Well I don't know that your Smith is right.
I recently read an article in which a Ruger 77 was converted to 375 H&H. BUUUUUUUUT, I think there were some concerns with the reliability of the 77 in 458, as I recall, it was unreliable case ejection that was of concern.
I think you would be better to consider buying a 458 Lott in the newer magnum rifle. thumb

I'm sure w/ enough money you could alter the action on a M77 & get it to work for the Lott, but the mag. box is definetly too short. Go w/ the Ruger RSM or a CZ.

It is really pretty easy. Use a RSM box and follower and a little gringing on the bolt stop and ejector. Don't know if the parts would fit the 77R.

What ramrod said...

here's the deal.. the ruger action is longer and wider than ANY m98, and the lott has been done on them.

Should be replace and fit the box, adjust boltstock, retime ejection, might have to open the exjection side of the rear bridge, open the stock, and generally fiddle, but it can be done.

Now, you have to ask yourself.. do you want a 100% pushfeed 458 lott, as all tang safety (unless a reworked mkII) are 100% pushfeeds. Myself, the concept of LOTT and TANG safety means cut thumb

You guys are putting holes in my balloon of ideas -- one of the primary reasons behind this idea was the tang safety -- I am not a fan of three position safeties -- I was born and raised with two position safeties - on/off - I have tried the three speeds and did not have a romance - sooooo - thought that maybe and older Ruger with the tang safety would be the way to go to build the big boomer -- but guess all said my idea may not make sense – I’m bummed – ugh!

Wood,
you could do the tang safety... but do you wrap your thumb around the stock? guys that learned to shoot with 1903s and some mausers may not

Jeffe -- yep guilty on the thumb around the stock -- but I get your point that could be a real hide (mine) removal program -- honestly had not thought about that part -- was concentrating more on the safety issue--- I have pretty well scrapped this idea as there are better ways to let the air out of big critters -- I do have a 416 Rem so why do I need a 458 Lott -- now that should open up the mail bag --heh heh

Your lost in more than one way in this case! Unfortunetly the Mod 77 Ruger is not only a short action, but is a PUSH FEED action as well, neither of which is suitable for a DGR! I too like the tang safety on a rifle, but not if I have to use a PF for a DGR.

My ignorance on the Ruger system is obvious -- did not realize the PF issue on this rifle -- this whole idea has now been trashed - UGH!

Wood,
brief ruger update

two models of Ruger 77 (not mkII)
round top
Square bridge

both have tang safeties
Roundtop take remington 700 bases
both are pushfeeds, just like the 700

model 77 mkii.
3 models -

22h/44mag - very short action, rotary mag like a 10/20
223-308 short actions
30-06 length
square bridge
3 position safety (though too "short")
CRF by design.. but may require work to be 100% CRf

model 77 RSM sometimes called Safari mag, or Express.
larger by about 3/8 long and 1/8 (might be more) wide
quarter rib barrels.. actually DUAL quarter ribs, up and down.

same barrel profile (outside dimensiosn) used in all calibers
from 270 and 300win (very very heavy guns)
375, 416 ribgy, 458 lott.

generally excellent guns RSMs that is.

Ruger had a history of not being good shooters. This is due to both the trigger (which generally sucks from the factory, but can be worked) to poor QC on barrels.

at least the barrel thing has been fixed.

All ruger boltgun actions are cast and you have a risk of them turning purple when blued

Jeffe -- Big Thanks --the only Ruger I own - or have ever owned is a #1 223 Hvy Barrel with a replacement trigger (can't remember brand) for Pasture Poodles for which it really is one of my favorites at stopping P Poodle charges before they can start.
