Shumba, I bought the blank from Dressles, and had Great American Gunstocks (GAG) turn it. Stock was on the skinny side they were the only ones that would touch it. I don't think they turn a stock as good as some, but they have some very good patterns and are very accomodating. I don't know if you can see from the pic, but my cheek piece is not very thick. When I bought that blank I didn't know much about buying blanks, but when you start spending hard earned money its amazing how fast you learn

Either a Win. from the custom shop or a custom rifle will work out for you...Just depends on taste and what your looking for... I would prefer a full blown custom rifle in English styling but your talking a minimum of $4000. and could spend three times that much...

I have a M-54 Winchester in 30-06 that I would like to use the action for the 404 Jeffery. Is this enough action? Will it hold the 404?? Any major work needed..?? Thanks in advance <<>> Maddog

MADDOG Lots of major work needed. I'm sure it could be done though. I would swap the rifle for one of the classics in one of the ultra mag cartridges and a lot of the work would be done already. Plus you would have the 3 position safety that you would probably want to add to the 54 any way. Shawn

Sure it will work as the 54 is simply a Pre 64 M-70 for the most part... If I were going to make a 404 from a 54 then I would build a iron sighted gun and not plan on using a scope...It would be a real nice gun and I'm not sure one really needs a scope on a 404 or such caliber.. Otherwise I would get well used pre 64 M-70 that has the safety and trigger, and is D&T for a scope....Those conversions are expensive on a 54, so it would be to your benifit to use a M-70...

I am also thinking about a 404 and the M70 because of the fine trigger and 3 position safety. I am not skilled enough to want to do any of the work myself so would need one of the fine gunsmith who post here do the work. My question for Ray or anyone who has experience with the Winchester Custom Shop is now that they say they will make a 404. Would you consider the Winchester product or still go with the gunsmith. From looking at what other have posted about prices for the parts and labor I think they are in the area price wise. Any thoughts to help me decide? Thanks Jim
