Does anyone have a Ruger in 458 Lott? If so, give me your thoughts. It seems to be specified right.

I have a 416Rem and am also pondering having a 505 Gibbs built on a BRNO 625 action

I have one that I picked up several months ago and shot approximately 50 rds. through it and loved it. I of course cheated and added tungsten rods in buttshock and forearm for additional 1 1/4 # in weight. That really helps in bench sessions when you need to sight in with iron sights and my QD mounts and 1.5-5 variable scope. The rifle is now tame enough for one of my buddy's girl friend to fire 5-10 rds. without pain. Since the modification to it, I have fired 100 addition rds through it off-hand, and kneeling with sticks. If you are just looking, you can't go wrong. If you have one in possession, just shoot it in field positions and you won't feel a thing. [Cool] [Big Grin] [Big Grin]

Thanks, the weight was my only concern with the rifle. How does it cycle, and what is the wood nice?

Since Ruger has come with the big-bore RSM's for African hunting, the wood has been pretty good to outstanding and the trigger pulls out of the box have been in the neighborhood of 3-3 1/2# in weight. You can cycle them upside down, sideways and any way that you can think of. These are examples of the rifles that I own in the last 3-4 yrs. I own 1 ea in 375 H&H, 375 Ultra (modified of course), 416 Rigby, and 458 Lott. I also have an older 458 Win that is absolutely soft shooting. Obviously, I like the Ruger bigbores that are of recent manufacture.

Retreever--Just out of curiosity, how do you hold it as suggested by your PH? Was there a special method to this? [Roll Eyes] [Confused]

475guy,

My Ph told me I have to be able to fire 3 rapid aimed shots..To do this hold the rifle in your arms and not buried into the shoulder..Grip fore end of stock forcing rifle into shoulder and pistol grip hand push the rifle away from you..Towards the muzzle...Your arms take the recoil like shock absorbers...The stock is just firmly against the shoulder not tight like shooting a 308 or 270...Takes a little practice doing it but it works...I fired it from shooting sticks and Ian, Ph said practice standing and then go to the bench...
The first shot, I had an audience of 5 and after the shot...I turned and smiled and said "sh.. that was not bad at all turned around and reloaded and fired another...Al prestne fired at least 2 rounds after I showed them how too hold...
No decelerator piston just the pad

Mike

Thanks! It sounds like a good solid factory gun. I have never heard of that method of holding the rifle. I'll give it a try.

Does anyone know where I can get one?? Nobody seems to be able to locate one.

Try the GunList or bug the shit out of your dealer and have him call all the major distributors in your neck of the woods. They are out there but you have to earn it and search for it. [Cool] [Roll Eyes] [Razz]

If memory serves me correctly and it usually doesnt, can .458 winmag's be fired in a .458 lott chamber? Im thinking about getting a #1 in .458 lott. Hey cole, I see you are in my neck of the woods i'm 15 mi west of Dewitt in Lowden.

This can be done only in an emergency. The 458 Win will fire-etch your 458 Lott chamber with very hot gases and over time the Lott brass will flow into the circumferential ring and cause stuck brass. [Eek!] [Eek!] [Razz]

I've got a RSM in .458 Lott on order from my gun club at $1050 (which seemed like a decent price to me - of course, they still have to find one!), so I'm pretty interested in this thread.

Regarding the issue of firing .458 Win Mag ammo in a Lott chamber, is this in principle any different than a hot .45 Colt in a .454 Casull chamber, or a .38 Spcl in a .357 Magnum? I've always wondered if the very phenomenon you mention would take place, but I've never heard it discussed before.

I know that I do have to clean my .357 or .454 pretty well to get it to cleanly seat the longer rounds as cleanly, but I always took this to be carbon, or whatever. Whatcha think?

On another note, I'm sure glad I found this site...

The F990 pad really makes a difference with the big bores doesn't it. I really like them amd even have one on my 45/70 for the hotter loads. Works great.
Take care,
Dave

Sixgun,

If you get one for $1,050 you are getting a deal. The lowest price I've been quoted is $1,300.

Now all we need is for Ruger to make more.

Sixgunner--The next time you disassemble your revolver, look in the chambers that have been with your 45 Colt handloads. You'll find a RING in the area ahead of the 45 Colt brass where combustion and hot gases have already etched your 454 chamber. For light use, the ring isn't too bad, but it is still there. Why do you think FREEDOM ARMS offer 45 Colt cylinders in their 454's? If you use heavy 45 Colt loads w/325 gr bullets, the chamber etching will just get worse and worse. One day, you'll fire 454 rounds and get a cylinder full of stuck brass. [Cool] [Roll Eyes] [Razz]

DaleA, so can 240 Weatherby Mag, 257 Weatherby magnum, 264WinMag, 7mm Rem Mag, 7mm Weatherby mag, 300Win Mag, 300 H&H mag, 300 Weatherby Mag, 338 Win mag, 340 Weatherby Mag, 375 H&H Mag, 375 Weatheryb Mag, 416 Taylor, and any other cartridge based off of the 375 H&H case less than .458 caliber. HOWEVER I STRONGLY RECOMMEND AGAINST SUCH PRACTICE THOUGH [Smile] .

475Guy - Looks like I'll leave the 45's in the 45's, and put the SRH on a 454-only diet!

My RSM is on backorder, probably like everybody else's who is looking for one. I checked Davidson's site, and they're listed as "allocated" which seems to mean that every one that ships in already has a home before it arrives.

Is this particular to the Lott? Seems like I've run across .375's and .416's with at least some frequency in the past, and I live in the Mid-west. Local need for something of this magnitude is somewhat limited, to say the least!

Sixgun,

The Lott chambering is new for Ruger, so I suspect their production levels are not at the level of their offerings in the .375 and .416 calibers. Plus, there always seems to be a spike in demand when something "new" comes on the market.

Regards,

Terry

DaleA, The only thing I ve had done to the stock is replace the recoil pad with a Decelerator pad. A 1x4 vari X 2 is mounted on top of the 458lott. Has excellent eye relief.Been shooting 600grs. Barnes bullets at 2000 fps. Kicks on both ends !
