There is one of these actions for sale but I don't know anything about it. It's kinda cheap I guess at about 100$. Does any of you guys know about this action? Would it be suitable for, say, a 505 or 500 Jeffrey or something similar, perhaps a Rigby? Does it have the "right" safety, extractor, mag capacity and other required stuff for a DGR hunting rifle or does it need much rework? Anny other comments. Manny thanks for your time on this matter

Thomas, I used a GOOD eddystone for my 500 jeffe... do a serach in here and gunsmithing for details to look for. jeffe

My understanding is that some of the Eddystones can be questionable. It had something to do with the forge operators turning the temp up too high so they could increase thier piece rate through the forging dies. But with the action steel billets held at too high a temperature for too long the metal becomes brittle. Not all of them are that way though. I built a 30-378 on an Eddystone and sent the whole thing off to 300 below for a chryogenic treatment. It was supposed to stress relieve and increase tempered martensite. Making it tougher and more ductile. The Wins and Rem are supposed to be good as well as the P-14's. I'm not an expert on this, just read alittle.

You'll be dollars ahead starting with a CZ-550 action, but if you just have to use and enfield, it can be made to fit the largest of rounds, with many hours at the B-port.

Thanks for your comments. It seems this is not a sure thing to buy. I allready have a CZ 550 swith barrel. Perhaps I just go for another barrel in 500A2, not as nostalgical but probably as fun.

Do you need to use a vise and wrench when changing the barrels on your rifle? I have always liked the idea of a breakdown/switchbarrel rifle. Somebody already said it, unless the work has been done already (ears ground off, top reprofiled, and much more) then it isn't worth it to start with an Enfield, even though they have the size for it. I have two of them and love them more than any other action, they just aren't practical if you are starting from scratch. Red

Yes, my smith made a vise and a wrench that goes where the bolt should be. I tight it with a torque wrench so to get the same torque every time, about 10 Nm. This is not enough for a DGR I guess but for normal deer hunting and target practice it's ok. The vice is portable, just clamp it to a table. It's a cheap way of getting/testing many callibres and here in Sweden it's the only way to go since you are not allowed more than 4 hunting rifles. (including a shotgun and a .22)

I will say they clean up nicely though. If the rear bridge hole is filled and the action re-profiled to FN specs, (and a new bolt handle put on) it looks like a giant Mauser. The CZ rifles aren't ugly, but I don't think they are especially pretty in stock form either. I spent the same amount, plus a bit, on an Enfield version. Todd
