Has anyone done a conversion on an Enfield action (.303) to .405 Winchester? The rim diameter is almost the same as is OAL of the rounds. Just thought this might be a good route to go for a nice big bore if you have an old shot out .303.

Enfield's are taken to 45-70 many times and I did a 458 American on a Ishapore 2A. You will have to load to ~3.06" to fit the 303 magazine. Rim won't be a problem.

I have tried to cycle them in one of mine and other than being a little bit long, depending on how deep you seat the bullet, it looks like it should work.

And would make a pretty powerful thumper

I've got a No4 MK1 that Navy Arms converted to 45-70, roughly. It works though and has plenty of magazine length. I just got a synthetic stock yesterday to replace the cheesy sporter it currently has and am going to cut down the 22" tube a bit and it will be set.

I love the 45-70 for what it is and its history, but the 405 is a classy round too.

Pick the bullet you want to use...adjust the COAL to the max you want that will work through the mag...THEN...trim the case to where the cannelure is, if the bullet has one, or the point on the bullet where you want the case to end.

This will give you the max case volume below the bullet for reloading purposes.

I have 4 different bullets I shoot in my 458 Am...ALL have different cannelure points and I have 20 cases each trimmed to give me a COAL of 3.08" to work in the 308, 10 round 2A mag. I use 458 WM, 416 Rem/375 H&H cases trimmed to match the specific bullet/COAL.

Some of the lighter bullets have cannelure at points where In have to use the longer 375 H&H case trimmed to 2.58" and others I use WM trimmed to 2.25" to 2.35".

I used a 458 WM reamer to cut the chamber.

Years ago I saw an original commercial style British Enfield rifle chambered for .405. Can't remember who built it. Someone like Gibb's. Neat rifle.

The 405 W is actually a better case to use for that conversion because the rim size is basically the same size as the 303 Brit...0.543"/0.540"...no mucking about with the magazine/rails/receiver opening/extractor, etc...just re-bore/re-barrel/re-chamber, load up and go shooting.

Nothing puny about the 40 cal either...pick the right bullet, put it where it belongs and you have medicine for ANY game in the world...argumentatively speaking of course. Wink Big Grin
