I think the .416 Remington is a more versatile cartridge, and it's much more shootable than the .458 Lott. The .416s, including the Remington version, sit in the middle of the pack -- right between the .375 H&H on the low end of the acceptable DG cartridge scale, with the big .458s (et al) on the high end.
I really love the .416 Remington, simple because it perfectly combines excellent shootability with a significant step up in power over the .375 H&H in a fast-handling, handy size rifle that is of basically of the same dimensions as a .375, plus is feeds like a dream out of the magazine. But no, it won't match the big .458s, including the .458 Lott for power. That's the trade-off, but it's still a better trade-off than insisting that the .375 H&H is all you need for any DG situation.
For me, the Lott is a real handful to shoot well (I know, everyone else shoots it as well as they do a .243 Win.!). Even so, I plan to have one made with a 23" barrel and open sights only -- no scope. The Lott is hard on scopes, very hard. The little fixed-power Leupold 2.5X Compact seems to be the scope that holds up to the Lott better than anything else............
