600 overkill plinking loads
I thought I would share some lower cost 600OK plinking rounds I have been shooting.
I have been using RL15 and 3/8 foam plugs with a 1040grain cast lead flatnose. These are from beartooth bullets and cost 15.50 for 20 or 78cents.
ive shot 2 loads the first were running 1550to 1600fps.
my seconds I boosted a bit and got 1700 to 1725fps.
the recoil isnt that bad and i havent added my recoild reducers and the rifle is about a pound light now.
I still have a bit of sight work it shoots about 11 inches low.
I am happy enough now I am breaking the beast down and am gonna start making her pretty.

Hey, Dean! If you touch that beast off near the house, does the concussion cause avalanches of snow off the roof? Big Grin

I have almost reached 45/70 load levels Roll Eyes
Seriously is about 1600 to 1700 fps the limit before you have leading problems without gas checks?

Dean,
I buy my casts for wayne D (jana wont let me cast) and try for 22-25 brinnell hardness...

w/o gc, I routinely shoot at 2300... and run a solid in about every 10th shot or when the groups open up...

Leading, or the worst part of it, isn't from "melting lead from the back"... it's from the lead getting gascut...

a lexan disc, for a wad, would help...

2000 fps for pure lead is TOP.. but that's a B of what, 4-6?

Call beartooth and ask em how fast you can take em.. bet it's 1900-2100

For what its worth beartooth says they have a few 600 nitro shooters running thiers at 2000fps with no problems. So I guess I have more room to grow with these.

Dean,

There is no absolute muzzle velocity where plainbase bullets start to lead. There two major mechanisms of leading, one as was previously mentioned is gas cutting, the other is rifling force shearing the lead.

To prevent gas cuting, requires proper sizing of the bullet to the throat, a thousandth or two over is good, undersize is bad.

To prevent the rifling from shearing the bullet, is a balance of muzzle velocity and barrel twist, as well as bullet hardness.

The gas check serves two purposes, one is a seal that is resistant to gas cutting, and as a reinforcment to the bullet to prevent stripping.

You should be able to get 1800 with no problems, maybe up to 2000 fps, and maybe a bit higher. It just depends on your barrel and bullets.

Gotta love 1000+ gr plinking loads Big Grin
