I have contacted AHR and BijouCreek about doing a 600 OK. Their prices are really close to one another. 6K. Are there other well known builders that I should be contacting? was hoping to keep it under 5K. Is that possible? I don't really need AAA wood or exhibition which both of these offer. By well known I just mean ones that won't leave me with a bad feeling as I send them large amounts of money and wait for a rifle from them.

Actually, the bad feeling comes after the first pull of the trigger regardless of who builds it.

Jim,
As I am going through that "bad feeling" after putting my trust into someone I should not have, my advice is that you should stick with a reputable person or company who has actually built at least one successfully. They would have to have both qualities in my book.

Mine was built by AHR. In fact, I have actually ahd them build three behemoths for me - 2 600OKs and one 585AHR. I can personally vouch for Wayne (and Ed Plummer before him) and AHR to provide a great product at a fair price and deliver it on time or earlier than promised.

Bijou Creek has done some great work from what I have seen here but I've never personally held one of their rifles.

So let me repeat what I said above:
my advice is that you should stick with a reputable person or company who has actually built at least one successfully. They would have to have both qualities in my book.

Oh and as far as pain on shooting it - if I can successfully shoot and hunt with a 600OK, anyone can.

thanks for the reply. the more I am looking at AHR website the more I think its not that bad a deal. With the AAA stock and the blueprinting the receiver and everything else they do. They have been very quick to respond to my emails. I guess if I"m going to spend 5K I might as well spend 6K.

Jim,

I think you would be making an excellent decision. Do a search on AHR and you will find countless supporters who would be happy to give you specifics of why they are such satisfied customers.

There simply are no better folk than Wayne and his crew at AHR.

Good luck and stay well,

Paul

Jim,
I know nothing of 600's but have seen many postings here with people who lost money with people like Hein (almost lost 3K myself) and more recently, the guy from Denmark who conned money out of people on here.
If you want to sleep well at night listen to the advice CCMDOC is giving you. There are always "diamonds in the rough" as far as upcoming gunsmiths but for an expensive project like this where feeding issues have to be resolved stay with someone who people speak highly of.

Jim,

welcome to the forum. The 600 OK is a crusher, I have shot a couple while at Wayne's house. He is a good person, you can take what he says to the bank.

Check your PM's.

regards,

Rich

I'll bet even money that I could talk nearly anyone into how to build a .600OK for under 2K. This was never intended to be a elitist gun. Trust me both of my .600Ok's probably cost less than $2k together. Im sure AHR or PAC-NOR would do all the metal work and any reasonably talented guy could stock it themselves. Ok it wont be engraved and checkered by Virgins, but it will shoot. The formula hasn't deviated far from the first one I built 10 years ago. AHR unlike most of the great custom gunsmiths wont screw you and for many thats worth the freight. Just because some of the great gunsmiths can screw a barrel to an action doesn't mean they can build a reliable DGR. AHR can do that and if you have no mechanical abilities thats where to go. If you can work metal and wood/fiberglass you wont spend nearly as much.-Rob

I have had Wayne at AHR build two guns for me, a .416 Rigby and a full custom 450 Dakota and I couldn't be happier with his work. He is a stand up guy with a wonderful family and he does great work at a fair price and he does it on time!

am lucky enough to own 5 of Waynes guns and 4 of Mikes guns. Both are great people to work with. You can trust both of them to build a great product.

Wayne is top notch, and have had him build two rifles (375H&H and 416 Rigby) He has my action and will have him build a 600 OK as soon as I have the funds.

Had a nightmare build that took 2 years and 8 months ( Promised in 18 months), with another builder at three times the cost.

The service and demeanor with the other builder was terrible while Wayne build times were 4-6 months.

Wayne is always available and I consider him a friend as well as a good rifle builder.

Have shot many times with Rob gunbuilder and his advice is rock solid. He is the developer of the 600 OK and his advice is gospel.

I can second this as well. Deal with a known quantity when you make that special purchase that takes many months of wages (and/or years of savings) to save for. Saving ~%10~%20 only to find out you got an inferior product, or a different product then what you thought your ordered, or no product at all just isn't worth the trivial savings.

I'm sure there are many good rifle builders out there that can build the rifle of your dreams but, Wayne is the one builder I have met in person whose rifles I have handled. After emails and phone calls and the face to face time, I know my money and trust would be well placed with him if I ever custom build a bolt action DGR.

Wayne is good to go. He will deliver what he promised when he promised it. I've not known another person in the custom gun business to do that consistently.
