I put one of the 3/32 white beads on my 458 Lott and there is a peice of metal projecting out past the barrel band when installed. Is this supposed to be broken off? How?

Thanks in advance.

I've got the same thing on the same gun in 375....I just left it...no big deal. If you wanted to, CAREFULLY grind it down and touch-blue it.

here's a properly installed NECG sight and nothing was protruding.

If you have something protruding it's not installed correctly.

If you buy the Ruger replacement bead from NECG and put it on the current vintage of RSM, there will be a small piece that sticks out. On the old Ruger Magnums it fits perfectly although you have to remove the plunger (on the old model the plunger is on the front, not the back) and use the tap screw to secure it. I have never bothered to remove the very small piece that sticks out on the RSM. On mine, the inserts have a cut that looks like it goes 2/3 of the way through the insert. It is a little ugly sticking out but otherwise does not impair function.

So how did you remove the factory bead? I can't get mine popped loose. I pushed down on the plunger while I was trying to tap it back, but that little @#$! stayed right where it was?

Am I doing something wrong? seems like it should be a rather straightforward process, but I'm failing so far.

They are damn tight and a pain in the butt to remove. I have had someone hold the plunger down while I take a dowel or something like that and tap on the back of the sight to bust it loose. My experience has been mixed, in some cases this has worked with little problem, in one instance I ended up busting the "tit" part of the plunger off (which you can reorder from Ruger cheaply). It is a challenge to tap the back of the sight since whatever you are using to hold the plunger down is generally in the way. You just have to hold the dowel/punch or whatever you are using to tap with a hammer at an angle.

Then, once you get the damn thing off, make sure you keep the problem from happening again. On the NECG sights I have replaced the original sight with I have filed the sides of the sight down so that the sight, while still tight, will slide into and out of the barrel band without a hammer. A little 4440 bluing liquid will reblue the sides of the sight that are filed down.

The old style Ruger banded front sights had the plunger on the front of sight, so you could hold the plunger down and get straight on contact with the sight on the back to tap it out. Don't know why they changed to put the plunger on the other end, but it is a pain to deal with.

Consenting wife with round toothpick pushes down on plunger while rifle is in a gun cradle. I then use a hardwood dowel and tap, tap, tap....TAP....until it slides out. Doing it by yourself, unless you are deformed with 3 or 4 arms...is difficult.
But it did cost me dinner....go figure.

....sorry, forgot to mention that MJ is exactly right. Once the old one is off, "doctor" the new one to a firm fit and touch blue once installed.

I got mine off by clamping in my gun vice and getting my wife to hold down the plunger with a small punch as I tapped it out with a oak block,it was still difficult to do.The trick is before installing new one is to sand bottom of sight by running it across emory cloth unti it fits snug but not too tight. They are a great improvement and wish they came factory.I may try to carefully trim mine with Dremel cut-off wheel and cold blue.

Thanks

I've used a pin punch that's slightly smaller than the hole the detent works in. Push the detent down and hold then lean the punch against the front of the sight while tapping on the side of the punch with a small hammer. It works but involves holding your tongue correctly while doing it. Big Grin

And the NECG sight hangs out of the front of all my Ruger front sights which are of the newer variety.
