My thread about 270 or 338 got me thinking. What are your most overkill kills.

In order: Beaver 458 Lott 500 grains rain beaver parts down like rain.
Beaver 500 ne noting left in the middle, just spine, legs, and head.
Mud turtle 405 win 300 spire point similar to 458 beaver, small pieces mixed with water raining down.
180 pound whitetail 375 Ruger 300 DGX behind last rib ranging up. Liquified everything it touched.
Gray squirrel 2 oz 3 1/2 12 gauge. Nothing left but the head and spine. I had the wrong shell in gun.

Hoary marmot (aka whistle pig aka rockchuck) with a .458 WinMag.
The old Hornady RNSP 500-grainer at 2150 fps was more than adequate for marmot or moose out to 100 yards, from soup to nuts.

Wild turkey with a 300 Weatherby Magnum at 50 yards.
Took his head clean off, more velocity than needed was used.

Fallow deer doe with a .416 Rigby and 350-grain X-Bullet at 342 yards. Field-dressed on the hoof.

.395/.416 Rigby (.395 Tatanka) with 340-grain GSC HV at 2750 fps on nice whitetail buck at 25 yards, from a tree stand:
I could have lost my balance from the recoil, but I did not, thankfully.
Same-same with .375 RUM and 300-grain Swift A-Frame.
Whitetail doe was taken on the ground with .395 Tatanka and .395/310-grain S&H Hexploding brass bullets at 2800 fps.
Baboons in Tanzania too.
Just a little bit overkilled on those.

400 Whelen on Bambi and his mother, bang-bang, the 300-grain Hornady SP makes a mess of deer at close range.
Culling the herd in family units is best,
his father was taken earlier.

223 Rem, 50-grain ballistic tip on bobcat at 25 feet: He exploded. I was able to recover the head for skull as a trophy.

Trophy opossum clubbed in head with big stick. More stick than necessary. He was mounted in a life-like pose and graces a local sporting emporium.

Underkill:
I chipped the antler of a big whitetail buck with same 223 round at 300 yards.
He was grazing and ducking his head towards his vitals when I fired.
He ran off about 30 yards then stopped to look around to see where those pesky bullets were coming from. One more shot and he went down.
He is mounted, on my wall.

I better stop now ...

Jack Rabbit with 416 Rigby, 400 gr Hdy (pre DGX)
1st shot took him a little far back and his initial reaction was to look around and notice that he was "leaking". This must have really pissed him off because he immediately charged the vehicle we were in with his tushes extended. Needless to say, I carefully placed the next shot between he headlights and he crumpled with his front paws touching the front tire. A close call indeed but the Rigby proved itself more than up to the challenge.

Sounds more like “under kill” you had to shoot twice.

I have two contenders for biggest overkill.

Ground squirrel with a 300 grain TSX out of my 375 H&H

A fly with a 36 grain Varmint Grenade from my 22.250 at 4,000 fps.

I ran 4 out of 5 flies on day at a 100 yards with a 223 the 5th one move just at trigger let off.

Just parts of legs and wings around the holes.

My records say it was a 69 grain SMK instead of a Varmint Grenade

Skunk at about 20 yards with a 300 grain, .458 Hornady Hollow Point from an 1895 Marlin .45/70 lever action.

Skunk was running straight away from me and I hit it square in the ass. It just sort of disintegrated at the shot.

Ditto.

I want to take up fly shooting with my 22-250 Tikka T3X.

I may have bagged a grasshopper or two,
but I have never baited for flies at the rifle range.

What do you guys smear on your targets to draw flies?

Mine we were having a tent caterpillar out break the blue flies are their natural enemy.

There were many flies around preying on the tent caterpillars, so they landed on every thing.

It was just natural to try to shoot a few when they landed on the target.

Do you honestly believe that those people that want hunting stopped really differentiate between an "Overkill" and a clean one shot kill?

No they don't. If we were going out, chasing animals down and strangling them, they still want hunting in ANY form stopped.

Should hunters become the "Homosexuals" of the 21st. century and go into the closet and not discuss hunting in public?

I would observe that most of these overkills are varmit or nussiance animals. On the medium big game when more than enough gun was used the overkill application ensured death quicker maybe, maybe not, and no meat was wasted. At least, in my cases. I will not speak for anyone else.

I believe in honest reporting about what hunting is. I will never apologize for good shooting. However, I will not go out of my way to upset or dissolution a non hunter. Unless, I can do so face to face in the context of having a conversation. I am not ashamed. I will not hide. But I am not going to walk into a Chatolic Church and start trying to make everyone baptist. That is why this conversation is on Accurate Reloading and not Facebook.

I will yield to the counsel of elders. If a majority thinks the thread is harmful to hunting, tell me in PM, and I will delete it.

I honestly do not think the masses care or even know what a groundhog or whisper pig is. No marketing/money for antis to be made off them.

I ate so many of them growing up, I will not shot another, but I am not everyone with large green fields these things can destroy.

If someone was being blankly disrespectful or using crude language, I would agree with you. But I have not read it.

I think that it's because we were asked for the most overkill. For a game animal my record is probably a steenbok with a 300 grain TSX from my 375 H&H but there are probably tons of them shot with big bores using solids.
