PH Action Caliber Choice

ElCaballeroPH Action Caliber Choice
I am thinking of putting my name on the list for a PH action. They want to know what caliber I will build it into. I have a .375 H&H so I want bigger. A .458 Win Mag doesnt seem right either as it will fit in a Mauser pretty well.
I don't know how much recoil I can handle. The .375 doesn't bother me. I always dreamed of a .416 Rigby.
What are some 40+ cartridges that are not killers in the recoil department but fit better in a magnum action?

700 nitroa 500 jeffery...... or perhaps a 450 rigby.
or my favorite a 505 gibbs.

jeffeossoSteve,
think 505 gibbs, not 500 jeffe ... the jeffe CAN fit in a standard action

ElCaballeroWhere does the .416 rigby stand on recoil?

MJinesRecoil from a .416 Rigby is very manageable, IMO. I would rather shoot my .416 Rigby than my .300 Weatherby. If you can shoot a .375H&H comfortably I would be surprised if you had any problems with a .416 Rigby. It is a truly grand old cartridge.

Hog KillerI agree with MJines, .416/400gr/2400fps = good shooting. Go for a 9 to 9 1/2 pound rifle.

Prewar70I don't have one yet, but I'd go 404 Jeffery and never look back.

light ... when loaded to weatherby ... light to mild .. as far as bigbore's go.
Prewar, the 404 fits their current production long action today.

As countless fellas here have probably read, I shoot my .416 Rigby PRONE off of a Harris Bipod when practicing for elk hunting. Recoil is brisk, but very manageable. My brother first SWORE that he would NEVER shoot it, however after I fired a 350gr. Speer Mag-Tip into a 10"x10"x16" colored ice block and it exploding into a mushroom "cloud" of dime sized hail, and I was left standing, he hooped out "Allllright!!! Let me shoot that thing."
Get the .416 Rigby, and don't look back!!! BTW,
HERE is a recoil calculator so you can do exact comparisons to see that it's not all that bad.

Paolo9,5x73Much depends on what is on the menu, but .416RemiMag would be my choice. Cheaper more readily avaiable ammo in slightly less bulky rifle.

Not

by no means, but he was asking about which caliber for the
PH Action. The .416 REM will fit in their standard Long Action.

Paolo9,5x73That's right, there are no "unknowns" in Long Action chart, and it would house necked up 8mmRemiMag (or .375H&H) nicely. It will make a more svelte repetier too.

I'd rather have a .375 Ultra!

<9.3x62>10.75x68 Mauser...
Can always push it out to 404 J if you end up finding a need to do so...

tiggertateI think I'm going to do another 505 Gibbs on one. I have a reamer for a 505/416 but to make that a shootable option for me I need a 28" barrel and muzzle break. Still deciding iof I want to go there. Ohterwiase I'll just put it in the safe and wait unitl I have a caliber epiphany. Maybe a 510 RIP/DOA?

ElCaballeroGot it put in. I told them I was going to build the Rigby.

Norman ConquestExcellant choice, the 416 Rigby.A few years ago when components had become scarce due to lack of interest, supposedly, that might have been an issue. Not today. And there's never been a question about its capabilities. You'll be pleased.
Never mistake motion for action.
