The Vais looks complicated, would it work on calibres as big as .585

PC....I don't know what caliber is his max but I would expect he could do anything on a custom order. The brake will work on any caliber but the effectiveness will vary depending on the velocityand how much bigger the brake is than the bore diameter...basically more effective on the faster calibers and larger brake diameters. There will always be some level of reduction.

With respect to being complicated, that's the maker's problem isn't it.....plus there aren't any moving parts....all you stll need to do is align the sights and press the go-button (trigger).

My smith is recomending an answer brake, I have heard they are very noisy is that correct Bill??. He is making it to fit our .585 barrels which turned up finally the other day.

PC.....I can only speak from my own experience...they would knock the ears off a brass monkey. Now you can get around that by using good ear protection and I would use good fitting "muff-type" protection plus I would have some of the foam inserts for my ears. The thing you can't stop is the blast of gas that will hit you in the face every time you shoot. I won't be around someone with these "tiny-hole" brakes.

Consider this......if you are shooting a rifle with a .308 bore and have it ported with a holes that are probably smaller than 0.10" what do you think the difference in exit speed would be for the gas at the muzzle and the gas out the ports?

Either Ron Bartlett or George Vais will sell you a brake your 'smith can install for you.

Bill, I might ring the smith today and talk with him about breaks. I do not want to order one from the states as all our stuff is there ready to make the rifles finally and I do not want any more hold-ups. The break from the states may take months just like our barrels have. It took 4 months for the dies from CH4 to arrive. I just want it all finished and done by september of this year, as we want to try our .585's out on some feral pigs. [Eek!]

PC,
Let's hear about the hogs when you get em. That's my favorite game in texas, as we get them past 700, and many at 300-400#. They are sometimes called "east texas grizzlies" as they are VERY aggressive in that part of the state.
good hunting

I spoke to George Vais yesterday about installing a brake on a Ruger #1 in 416 Rigby. George has had some health problems but is again well. He stated that he has a clean shop so turn around time is very short. George stated that I would need to use his magnum brake which is not as quite as his standard brake but will gain maximum recoil reduction. He is working a new magnum that will be quiter but it will sometime before they will be ready for market. The brake installed is $160.00 plus return shipping. His telephone number is 208-323-7674.

Jeffesso I am heading away in July to N.S.W and there is plenty up there. My .585 will not be ready until the September Hog Hunt I figure.

This trip I will try my .416 Rigby on Hogs as I have not killed pigs with this yet, I am going to use 410 gr woodeligh SN's at about 2550-2600 fps. I reckon they should do a number on large pigs. I also love to shoot my 45/70 Marlin, there agreat pig gun as well i use the sierra 300 gr FNHP's out of that at around 2150 and they open up really well, huge exits.

DB Bill I have spoken to my Smith in the last couple of days and he reckons he can make a break such as the VAIS that will give both good recoil reduction and not be to harsh on the ears.

PC....I would think that it would be less expensive for your 'smith to buy one from Ron and install it rather than spend the time trying to make one..as I understand it he has a "dealer's price" and a price to the public.

DB Bill,

The difficulty down here is that our dollar only buys US55c at the momoent. Then you can get caught for about 30% import taxes. Then there is the hassle.
