I am currently doing a 416 Rem. I just picked up a Sako Fiberclass in 375 H&H and a New Sako AV 416 Rem bbl. Just got to get it screwed on.

I also have a new M70 in 300 WBY and am looking for a 416 Rem barrel to screw on it.

If I were you, I'd look for a M70 take off bbl in 416 Rem...if you can find one. Lou

I tried to have my 375 re-bored but the stainless Win used on the M-70 doesn't re-bore well and I ended up having a stainless Douglas bbl installed and cut to 21 inches. I have had it in three stocks and liked features of each. The first was the trimmed down factory tupperware stock ( lightweight, tough and cheap), the second was a Borden (tough, & lightweight with a bit more class but kind of thin for a hard kicker) and it now rest in an Echols/McMillan ( which offers a bit more to hold on to and is as fast to use as the other two)
It has iron sights but I have never needed to remove the little 2 1/2 Leupold compact scope.

thanks for the advice...
BTW, 458win, what contour bbl did you go with?

the echols/mcmillan does seem to fit the bill.
and the 2.5 m8 compact is a FINE little scope...i am using one as a back up for my 338

I don't remember what the contour was but it is slightly smaller than the factory 375 so makes a reasonably light 416 - which is what I was after.

....My most recent 416 Rem I built on a CZ 550 Mag action . . It had a 10" twist stainless McGowan factory CZ contour barrel cut to 22" but with a muzzle brake installed .. I put it in an MPI drop box Double X Safari stock ...... It is a relatively slender ,in the wrist and fore end stock but very tough . The butt was nice and wide so that even with the 13" lop I had a good size recoil pad area . I had it finished up with express sights , under barrel 2 nd lug and a barrel band sling stud ..... It weighs the same as a CZ 550 458 , but the stock is much more slender tho still plenty robust for the rifle ..

.If it can,t be grown , its gotta be mined ....

IIRC, the M70 Classic barrels in .375 and .416 are close to a Douglas No.5 sporter contour.
Douglas No.4 sporter will work, but that is as light as you should go.
No.5 with a walnut stock is great.
No.4 with a lighter stock will balance well.
You can fine tune the barrel length to preference.

Very few M70 take-off barrels in .416 RemMag out there. Wink

Mod 70 is a great playtform. Buy a new stainless barrel (416). Mcmillan safari style drop box syntehtic stock, Sunny hill bottom metal (designed for this stock). NECG masterpiece barrel band front. Barrel band sling stud, Pachmeyer decelarator, Talley mounts and 1.5 X 5 Leupold scope.
Have a nice ceracoat finish applied to the metal
Later you can have a custom wood stock made to your taste.
Tune the trigger, swap the extractor for a billet unit.
Rock and roll!

Love the calibre. Mine has the Leupold QD mounts on it and I've never had problems. I use a 1.5x5 and 2.5x8 scopes which gives you some versitility. The larger scope does give you a love tap every now and then, so it's not for the shy.

For me, 9.5#-10# scoped is a comfortable wt. I can still carry it all day & practicing w/ it doesn't require a muzzle brake. So a 23" PacNor #4 or #5 depending on wt. Since it's SS, a syn stock works, McMillans a re great but there are others, again, depending on wt. I prefer wood, so on a SS, a laminate of suitable color would seem appropriate.

. I,ve spent some time thinking about making a light weight 416 , but now with the 416 Ruger I will opt for that round and factory rifle ........

458,

Did you try the "rebore"? Or just choose to go the new barrel route?

I'm considering having a Mod 70 375 in SS converted to 404 Jeffery.....

Thanks for your experience beer

I tried the re-bore first and was told by virtually every craftsman who does it that it probably would not work - and it didn't. So I ended up up buying a Douglas ss bbl.

From what I have learned stainless doesn't rebore and many rebore shops won't even make the attempt. Buy a new purpose built barrel!
