need help from some experienced shooters.

I just got my new Ruger #1 tropical in 375 H&H and I plan to put a scope on it. For some reason the gun shipped with the high rings (appropriate for a 50mm objective lens on a Leopould VX-III).
I have a Leopould with a 40mm objective lens. Should I send the high rings back and get medium rings? Does it really change the way you shoulder and shoot the gun to have high rings?

Also, at some point in the future, I plan to get a new Leopould scope with a straight tube in the front (1-4 power). How would this scope do with high rings?

I have a 1H in 416 and I feel that the lower you can get the scope the better. Go as low as possible. I use a burris 1.5x6 and like it. on the lower power scopes the big objective is a sales gimmic

I am not sure "going as low as you can" is that good an idea. My 1S in .300 Win Mag really hammered me and then I got a M-70 in another .300 and the kick was not as bad. Another shooter watching me shoot the #1 with the low rings said "your cheek turns red when you shoot that". I sent the low rings to Ruger and exchanged them for mediums. Your stock may not be the same as mine but it's a heads up.

I put warne QD medium rings on mine. Works great, my head isn't to low nor to high. Feels more natural.

As a suggestion on how to tell which rings to use:

1) Put the rings on the rifle without the scope.

2) Close your eyes, and shoulder the rifle so that your cheek is comfortably on the stock.

3) Open your eyes and note where you are looking relative to the center of the rings.

4) Repeat about ten times, and keep track of the results.

If you are consistantly looking through the center, the rings are the correct height, if youare looking through the lower portion of the rings, get lower rings. If you are generally looking through the upper potion, go with a higher ring.

This works for me, try it for yourself.

Low is not always good.

Make sure that you get a mount that fits. I have a buddy who is close relativ to the giraffes and need an extended mount to get the propper height.

I am a 6'3' person and a stock crawler I like low and never suffer from the red cheek sendrome but I also feel to each there own. I am also left handed and if I shot a factory stock it is never quite right. And I shot a lot of factory stocks. Also for me I want that sold full face contact that is very difficult to acheive with a high scope placement.
