If you go to the North Fork site and look at the soft point bullets, the specs for most bullets give you velocities. They use two abbreviations, FIV and PIV. I understand that the IV means impact velocity but what does the F and P mean? Favorable? Preferred?

I'd be willing to bet the P is "preferred." In other words, the FIV is the total Impact Velocity the bullet will work at, but the Preferred Impact Velocity is just inside those numbers on both ends. From what I see all of the PIVs are 100fps inside the FIV. Don't see it defined but I think that might be close.

Maybe Functional Impact Velocity and Preferred Impact Velocity??

I was wondering the same thing. I emailed Franz Jurva of North Fork Technologies and his response was:

"They stand for functional and preferred impact velocities. The functional velocity is the designed range the bullet is designed to perform in while the preferred velocity is where one could expect optimal performance."

Good question. The FIV and PIV stand for functional and preferred impact velocity. The functional impact velocity is the functional velocity range of the bullet starting where the bullet will start to open and the preferred impact velocity is the velocity at which you could expect optimum terminal performance. If there is a bullet in particular that yo would like the FIV or PIV for, we can give that to you. It's something we've been moving away from as it seems to cause more questions then it answers.
