.416 Rigsby velocities Login/Join

Guys,

Have seen the often quoted 400 gr at 2400 fps for the .416 Rigsby.

What sort of velicity is realistically and routinely achievable with 350 grain Speer and Barnes X projectiles?

I'm wondering what the reasonable use max range is for North American hunting as compared with the .338 Win Mag and .375 H&H mags.

Thanks!

It depends on if you load to the industry standard pressure levels, or to the same pressure levels as the 416 Wetherby.

If you load to factory levels, 2600 fps should be no problem, loaded to Wetherby levels, 2800 or perhaps a bit more. My personal thought is, the additional recoil created in getting that extra 200 fps would make placing shots accurately enough to take advantage of the flatter trajectory difficult.

It is plenty flat for 300 yd shots @ 2600 fps, and will have more then enough power for any animal in NA at that range.

I worked up to 108gr. of H4350 and a 300gr. Barnes X-bullet, which is the max. load according to Barnes. A 5 shot average was 3075 fps.
