Thanks Karl, Do you recall what cartridge they used to launch the bullets? I use 112gr of 4350 for the 500's and will start with 100gr for the 600's. The rifle is a custom 460wm on a Brno 602. Goes 10lbs with a 1.5-5 VariXIII.

I was loading some 500gr Hornady softs for my 460 and came across some 600gr Barnes that I had purchased in the 80's for this rifle. Any experience out there with these 600's on buff or elephant? Thanks.

VFR have never shot either game sorry but remember reading a stop box report in some magazine or another years back that showed the 600gn Barnes penetrating less than the 500 gn hornadies did. They expanded quite impressively though. Karl.

I can't quite remember but know it wasn't the 458 win because velocities were well over 2000fps. It might have been a 460 actually or the 460 van horn which I remember reading about at the time. I will try and locate the article. Karl.

You might be refering to an article by Bob Hagel in Rifle or Handloader Magazine, that was also reprinted in Big Bore Rifles and Cartridges. In a 460 Weatherby he loaded the 600 grain Barnes round point to @2300fpsfps. In his penetration box the 500 grain Hornady Soft factory load at 2582fps went 24 inches. The 600 grain went 22 inches. With 115 grains [compressed] of IMR4831 velocity was 2351fps With 112 grains [compressed] of IMR4350 velocity was also 2351 fps. Knowing Bob Hagels style these might be MAX loads in HIS rifle. [He used a factory Weatherby Mark V]. I would start lower and work up. Hope this helps. If I was going to hunt with full power 460 WBY loads I would use 500gr.Swift A-Frames, Trophy Bonded Bearclaws, or Barnes X bullets for Softs.
