What do you put your rounds in for your Africa trip? I have always used the plastic see-through for my Canada and Alaska trips with no problems. Will SAAPs except this or??

I've used plastic slip cases and factory ammunition boxes, even when using handloads, with no problems on trips to South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Tanzania.

What is 'SAAPs'?

Just a suggestion, when using plastic cases, both the slip cases and the ones that snap closed, I find it helpful to put a piece of duct tape across the case. That way you are not likely to find 80 rounds of ammo rolling around loose in your bag. Don't ask me why I came to that solution.

My plastic boxes were sealed with clear packing tape and I had two wide rubber bands on each box for keeping them closed after they were cut open (whether at customs/SAPS or in camp).

No one asked to see my ammo at any airport this last trip.

Call me anal (being a psychologist, that does fit), but I tape on the outside of the plastic box one of those "homemade" mfg labels you'll find on this forum. Then, using a vacuum plastic sealer, I seal the boxes. Looks just like factory ammo and I've never even been questioned on it despite having gone to a number of countries.

I use a couple of wide "rubber bands" made from a sliced up motorcycle tire tube.

Never had any problem with MTM slip cases but heavy rounds will break through the cheapies from Midway.

Step 1: Obtain plastic slip to ammo boxes.

Step 2: Print some Avery labels from your computer that show the caliber and bullet weight/type.

Step 3: Affix the Avery labels to the plastic ammo boxes. Put your ammo in the boxes.

Step 4: Use clear packaging tape to tape the ammo boxes shut. The tape should run across the Avery labels.

Step 5: Obtain a .50 BMG military ammo can.

Step 6: Paint the ammo can gold or purple or whatever so that it does not look military any more.

Step 7: Put the taped and labelled plastic ammo boxes inside the .50 BMG ammo can.

Step 8: Put the .50 BMG ammo can inside of your LOCKED suitcase.

Step 9: Proceed to Africa.

Skipped going to the office today and drover to Sidney (Cabelas). Picked up the plastic containers amoung other last minute items. I will mark, print, stick and seal accordingly. I have not decided on the military amo container yet. Thanks for the tip (500). thumb

BTW how many rounds do you suggest for a 21 day hunt??

Your full 11 pound maximum. Extra ammo never hurt anyone.

A cashbox (with key) can be substituted for the 50 BMG ammo can.

I picked up a plastic "ammo travel case" from Cabelas that held four boxes (two .458 and two .375):

Ammo Box

Not sure if it is the best solution but it worked this time.

500grains +1

Fifty caliber ammo cans are very durable and have a rubber seal. Spray paint so it does not look military.

Locking devices can be fashioned or purchased

I cushion the contents with pairs of socks and also squeeze in pocket knife, 1 ounce oil bottle, and any little doohickeys that may get broken or easily lost if the luggage gets torn open.

Buy a small MTM type ammo case to put your ammo in (the one for shotgun ammo and choke tubes works great) and put it inside your checked bag. I locked my ammo box on one trip and not on the other...the time I locked it, it was inspected in Frankfurt...so I left it unlocked the next time and put a combination lock inside the case in case the inspectors felt it should be locked.

Here are some pics of my ammo from my last trip to Africa...

Cheers,
Canuck

Use the plastic slip ammo boxes as 500 grains stated above then I use a pelican case with a TSA lock on the box. You can find any size pelican case you need, they are water PROOF and float, one tough case that you can buy for around 40.00

I also include 20 rounds of ammo for each rifle in my aluminum rifle case. That way I have some ammo if my bag is lost. Check with airline to be sure you can transport ammo in your rifle case first.
