Magna-Port vs muzzlebreak Login/Join

At my black bear hunt In Idaho last 2 weeks of June I had a chance to compare 2 375 H&H rifles. One was my Blaser R 93 with a standard contour bbl with Magna-Port. The other was a Blaser R 93 with the Safari bbl [one pound heavier than my bbl] with a Vias muzzle break.
Both rifles had the same synthentic stock, with recoil reducer and the same scope. Both were shot with Federal factory 300 gr Nosler Partitions.

My buddy and I shot bothe rifles side by side several times.

Results: My buddy said he could not tell any difference. To me it seemed the Magna- Ported bbl hit the shoulder very very slightly sharper, but had less muzzle rise.

I have shot a regular Blaser bbl next to this Magna-Ported bbl. Recoil and muzzle rise is greatly reduced with the Magna-Ported bbl.

Frankly I am impressed with the Magna Ported bbl. It reduces recoil and muzzle rise a fair amount but does not seem any louder to me.

The more I use Magna-Port the more I like it.

I've got a pre-64 Win M70 in .338 Win Mag. 'Twas built with lots of good stuff ... a Kreiger bbl, McMillan stock, NECG sights, lovely bottom metal, and mounts a Zeiss Conquest on Leupold QR rings. Shoots 1 1/4" or better at 200 yards. Have shot <2" groups at 300 yards.

It was Magnaported when it was built ... I didn't know any better, and I didn't expect to use it outside of North American and them mostly while hunting alone.

The rifle seems to recoil a little less strongly than a normal .338 WM, but the Magnaport really does reduce the muzzle rise. The character of the recoil seems to change a bit too ... it is not as sharp as rifle with a clean muzzle.

Noise may be a little greater but not much. Certainly is not as load as a typical brake.

I like Magnaporting too.

I also have a Magna-Ported standard weight .375H&H R93 barrel. I purchased it 2nd hand (2 shots! Whata deal!) from a buddy who simply cringed at the recoil from the light R93 synthetic platform (yes, you read correctly, one shot w/o Magna-Port and another after he had it Magna-Ported, I was the lucky recipient who happened to be standing closeby to glean the benefit of his recoil tolerance level).

I have to agree with both threads above. It doesn't seem to be any louder, either from the bench or in the field and the muzzle rise is definately reduced, especially off the bags and when shooting at game. Having said that I've also got a .375H&H Winchester Model 70 (not Ported) that weighs (all up w/sling, ammo & scoped) 11 lbs. It is a pussy-cat compared to the (my subjective) felt recoil of the much lighter Blaser.

Larry Kelley invented a solid product. I stopped by his shop years ago (he was a great host and a fantastic guy to talk with) and translated his orginal DEVA (German HP White Labs) report on a barrel that was measured and shot by them and then Magna-Ported and again tested. The German lab reported their measurements as a 3 Decibel increase in loudness and a 17% reduction in muzzle climb for an overall 7% recoil reduction.

I am also an extremely active Clay Pigeon shooter and have had 3 Remington 3200's, 3 Winchester 101's and all of my Remington 870 and 1100 (total 7 bbls.) Pro-Ported by Larry Kelley. My shooting colleagues claim they can definately hear the difference in my shotguns (louder but I don't notice it) but the muzzle rise when shooting doubles at Clays appears to me to be definately reduced.

For all that you can color me a satisfied Larry Kelley customer.

Cheers,

I'm a satisfied customer as well. I think that magnaporting is a better mousetrap.

I had a Ruger #1 in .375 that I had Magnaport. Recoil seemed about the same as the plain bbl. but muzzle rise was almost half. Very nice for keeping the scope away from your face. I found it a bit louder but nothing like the current crop of muzzle brakes.

muzzlebreaks are like getting married, if you don't like it you can always get rid of it. Magnaporting is like a huge tattoo, you got that puppy for life!
