i'm getting ready to buy a wide bore barrel for my encore.. After looking at the 405 it is very interesting but has a limted bullet supply & cases are more expensive..What are your thoughts?

I'd probably get the .45-70. More components if you reload, more factory options, if you don't. Only way I'd get a .405 is if I was going to buy an 1895 winchester..... Mad Dog

I have a .405 win on an encore that I've long throated to extend the bullets out .250. A few of the board members here have shot it. With a leupold 2.5X compact scope on it, Its VERY EFFECTIVE on deer and wild boar. Period! With the long throat and running about 56Kpsi loads and shooting 410 gr woodleigh sp's at 2200 fps this gun essentially duplicates or exceeds the 450/400. No one ever has complained about that on game up to and encluding cape buffalo. I have also played with the long throat concept on a 45/70 encore barrel and could not match the performance of the .405. The .405 win LT on a encore along with a .270win for example makes for a two barrel set that will allow you to take any game animal anywhere in a light handy to shoot deadly accurate package that when broken down doesn't scream VALUBLE Rifle. Another valid concept for your consideration is the 444 Marlin. About the same power as hot 45-70 loads, but using a .429 bullet. Works! Duhawki

quote: I have the encore bbl in 45/70 and love it. Don't forget to try some of the fime .458 spitzers out there...they will leave the 405 far behind downrange.
