Our local gun shop has a #1 with a pretty nice piece of wood, in 450/400 N.E. at a good price. This is one caliber I have no experience with. What can you tell me about this catridge, in the #1? I'm mostly a cast bullet shooter, so would be interested in any info regarding that as well. Also looking for a Marlin .45-70 for a project gun, if anyone has one for sale. Thanks in advance.

I'm shooting .410" sized 400gr cast bullets through mine over 30gr of Trail Boss powder and am having a great time. That loads hits to the same point of aim at 50 yards as my 400gr /80gr H4831 loads with jacketed bullets, so long as I run the boresnake through before switching between types of bullets.

I love mine, all the power I need and the gun is lighter than the other No. 1 Tropicals.

Forget the 45/70 and get the Ruger! 450/400 3 inch aka 400 Jeffery is a great round. Nice long.410 caliber 400 grain bullet gets the job done! Load it up or down.

Thanks Rusty. I think I'll go ahead and grab the 400 Jeffery. But the .45-70 will be converted to .500 B&M for use on our larger rouge jack rabbits here in Oregon. I'm hoping I can get some home cast 500 grain bullets to do a complete penetration on them even if shoulder bone is hit! Great fun! Anyone know where I can find the best source for load data in the .450/400? Seems illusive. Cheers.
