OK, I'm ready to jump past the point of no return. I'm looking at a rem M700ABG in 458 win. I like M700s, I like them a lot, and as most of my rifles are M700s i figure i won't have a brain fart if I have to flick the safety in quick step. Oh, and I'd be reaming it to the lott. Anyone have any practical experience with this model-- and I'm looking at the laminated stock, not the kevlar-- it matches my M700 375. Dan Donarski Hunter's Horn Adventures Sault Ste. You,ll need a new mag box spring and follower. mod the feed ramp angle a bit and play with the rails. You'll also want to install a barrel mounted recoil lug and steel bed it and the action. Add decent Crossbolts ( you need them with a laminated stock)and your done. With the right piloted reamer and some elbow work you won't even have to remove the barrel from the action. Go slow and check with Dye-chem. If you go too far you'll open the headspace.-Rob Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large numbers to do incredibly stupid things- AH (1941)- Harry Reid (aka Smeagle) 2012 Nothing Up my sleeves but never without a plan and never ever without a surprise!

nkonka I have 5 M-700's, but in a DGR and .458 Lott I would rather buy a CZ-550 or the ZKK-602 from Brno. Both of those rifles feature safetys that operate exactly like the M-700 (except the ZKK-602 direction is backwards), so if you buy either of those, there really is no learning to do regards the safety operation. Plus they are true Mauser Magnum length actions and CRF. Take a look at one.

The worst thing in the world you can do is switch to a "backwards" safety on a dangerous game rifle. Or any rifle for that matter. "Back" to fire and "Forward" to safe is awkward. Scratch that idea.

I agree with Buliwyf, scratch the idea of mixing the ZZK with Mod 700s! What would be a better idea is to scrap all the 700s and buy all ZZKs, or better yet buy all CZ 550s which have the safety going the right way, and are CRF as well! Just kidding you, but I would buy the CZ550 458 LOTT, with the safety working the same way as the 700s, but is a CRF rifle! The CRF system just adds one more feature to make the rifle safer to use for a DGR! Oh please! How much coordination is required to remember which direction the safety travels!? Who is Dumb-Ass enough to head off hunting Dangerous Game, with any rifle, without first hunting and becoming proficient with it!? If all you had ever used was a ZKK-602 you would be of the opinion that the CZ-550 and Rem M-700 are backwards. It takes little effort to become familiar with this safety and to switch back and forth between a ZKK-602 and CZ-550. Get either of those excellent Brno rifles and just practice with the damn thing(s) to become proficient. I have both, and I have no trouble operating the damn safety on either... but then maybe I am exceptional...

I know a guy that did that! Heck he is planning on doing it again this year. What does he care, he has us (myself and the PH/guide) backing him up. Actually, not me this year. By the way, you guys braggin' up the CRF must not have read the "Short Stroking" thread! Personally, I would leave the M700 a 458 Winnie (actually I would leave it on the dealer's rack, but that is probably just me).

You Demonical are Dumb-Ass enough to suggest it. Don't "Oh please" us with your Horseshit recommendation. No, the World does not use "backwards" safetys and it is no small matter. You, are full of Shit.

Buliwyf I don't care about dumb-ass insults. Call me whatever, since you don't have to back it up. I own both the ZKK-602 and the CZ-550 and I have no problem with the safety(s). I figure any competent rifleman would not have a problem either. Does this leave you out?

Weren't there reamers available when the Lott first came out commercially, that wouldn't cut in the belt region to prevent excess lengthening of headspace? I think the way it worked was by assuming the headspace on your 458 WM was correct, and just lengthening the chamber ahead of the belt.

Demonical, a competent rifleman isn't going to put himself in that position to start with. Only a dumb-ass would create that problem for themself. Which includes you.

There is a lot of work to conver to a 458 lott in the magazine feeding into the barrel. Also, the ejection port may be a bit small for comfort, especially in an oh shit moment. I would reccomend a rigby length action, and if the CZ is your bag, the saftey is fairly easily modified to change the direction of operation. I wouldn't have on with its current mode of op though.
