AllenBoselyLooking nice.
Any details on the metal work and any challenges or extra work to get reliable feeding?
I look forward to hearing more about you project.

It's a Mauser thing, you wouldn't understand.

Its still a long way to go.
Once the stock is finished the action will be bedded.
Then the fun starts to ensure the rifle feeds reliable every time.
The action is a K98 the barrel is 23 inches long and the diameter is 23mm.

DGR ShooterThe 500 Jeff is one of my favorite cartridges, but it's reputation for feeding problems is well earned. Good luck with your project and be sure to keep us updated on your progess!

Gerhard.DelportI just came back from Truvelo.
Here is some pictures on where we are on the project...
There is still a lot of work to be done but I am happy at where we are on the project.
The stock was build by Armtec situated close to Potchefstroom in the North West Province of South Africa.
The rifle weigh just over 10 lbs...

Pish posh.... The mythical feeding problems of the .500 Jeffery are so greatly overstated it's ridiculous. It's one of those things that gets repeated so often, it BECOMES the truth. In actuality, I think it is way harder to get a
.505 Gibbs to feed than a .500 Jeffery. It has a rebated rim....blah. blah, blah. So what. There are lots of cartridges with rebated rims that feed just fine. A single stack magazine is probably a good idea but mine has a staggered magazine and it feeds like butter. All you need is a competent smith and you'll have no problem especially if you are putting it in a long magnum length action.

Thanks for the advice.
Jip its one of the things that must still be done as I do not plan to use a rifle sling on this rifle.

surestrikeHmmmmm,
It's got me thinking. Since I now have a .404 Jeffery. Don't I need a .500 Jeffery to go with it?

Dave,
I have owned both the Gibbs and Jeffery and
IN MY EXPERIENCE the Jeffery has been a more difficult proposition. I am not simply regirgitating things I have heard from other people.
Yes, there are a lot of good smiths that can make one feed correctly, but there are a lot more who can't. It's not a job to be trusted to just anyone.
Obviously, you have one that has fed properly from day one

, just understand that all of us have not been so fortunate

AtkinsonI agree with DGR shooter, a lot of smithys don't know how to make a big case feed properly in the smaller actions..It takes a lot of work and expertise..The 505 Gibbs only for a true Magnum Mauser action or its ilk, and perhaps the 500 Jefferys is better suited to a magnum action as opposed to converting 98 milsurps. At least its argueable, but I have seen an awful lot of 500 Jefferys and 505 Gibbs rifles that didn't feed, but then I have seen a lot of rifles in every caliber that didn't feed..
Bottom line is test the crap out of any rifle that your going to use on DG.

jeffeossoGentlemen,
*I* have done the feeding on 500 jeffe's, and they are TOUGH.. the round is SEVERAL rebated, and the geometery of the case is such that if you wanted to have it in correct stagger feed, it IS wider than the OUTSIDE of the rails (not the top of the action, the bottom) and would require "triangle windows" to be cut out of the side.
Single stack, or modified single stack in the mauser is the easiest way.
it is a BEAR to get to feed, and don't kid yourself about it.. like saying it doesn't kick... and even *I* think a 500 kicks

Dave BushJeff, in the .500 Jeffery that you worked on, was it a .375 length action or a full length magnum action like the CZ? I have a CZ and I have had zip feeding problems. In fact, I checked it ourt again at lunch time with three 535 grain Woodleighs, a soft on top and two solids below. I think MJines had trouble getting his CZ .404 Jeffery to feed too. I can't figure that out at all. My CZ .404 feeds like butter and the .404 is renowned for smooth feeding because of the gentle taper of the case.

jeffeossoDave,
The length isn't the issue with the jeffe, its the width. Mike's issue with the 404 (I was shooting with him that morning, btw) was an oversized barrel ...
Enfields are what I have done them on.. and can't be talked into another one. Those are wide enough, and I learned a ton on it.... the CZ is more than wide enough for the 500 jeffe..
the mauser/enfield/m70 crowd... not so much.
The 500 jeffe cz is made with a mcgowen barrel at a third party gunsmith, and I am dead certain it feeds, or it wouldn't leave the shop

RobgunbuilderIve built two .500 jefferys on Cz550s and both were terribly difficult to get to feed reliably. The trick was relieving the bottom of the feed rails so the damn cartridge would not porpoise on the foreward bolt stroke. A trait of rebated rim cartridges in general. The fix requires milling and knowing where to mill and what are the correct rail angles. Luckily this has been publishedby Jerry Wisner. Good luck finding a gunsmith who can do that level of work! I'd say 1:10 .500 jefferys I've seen ACTUALLY feed reliably. A single stack mag helps a great deal but it requires tricks too. I'd much rather get a 505 Jeff to feed than a.500 jeff. Been there and done that.-Rob

Gerhard.DelportThanks for all the info guys,
Thats part of the fun building a rifle is to get it working excatley as it should.
I am sure I and the gunsmith will have a good relationship once the rifle is ready...

Good luck your further along than I am. I still owe you some photo's of my Steve Brooks 500 Jeffery mould. I'll try to get on it real soon. I am still waiting for my RSM 500 Jeffery conversion to emerge out of Jim Dubell's shop. I'm trying not to bug him too much but I'd sure like to shoot it soon. However, I want it to work also I'm giving him some time.. In my haste I picked up a 458lott&416rigby RSM just in case the 500 is a bust. Jim seems to think he can get things to work out ok. The rifle survived the rebore to .50cal. He is building a new mag box and floor plate to open up some room for the big fat 500. We are also doing some stock work as recomended by other on the forum to prevent a stock failure. I'll keep you posted once I know more.
Thanks Brad
