I have a classic Winchester in 300 RUM. I would like to have it converted to the 404 Jeffery. If the internal threads on the action are not straight, I would want those single cut straight. I would like to go to the one piece bottom metal made by PT&G. I'm willing to buy an aftermarket magazine box, and bottom metal as well. Thanks for any leads.

Bro' Dart, I wish I could help, but my 'smith is doing only face-to-face business now. Too many internet dumbasses wasting his time. I am not allowed to offer his services anymore. But that is a simple job that any smith worth his salt can do. Just make sure your barrel, reamer, dies, brass, and bullets are all compatible. Adding some parallel-sided free-bore (PSFB) to the "leade-only" throat of the CIP chamber is a good idea for compatibility with all bullets. PSFB diameter: .001" greater in diameter than the bullet diameter. PSFB length: No more than the diameter of the bullet. I think that 0.3000" would be sufficient to "Weatherby-ize" for most bullets. Leade angle: 1.5 degrees Starts with decision on barrel maker ... Hi Bro' Rip, I was thinking of McGowan. You had good luck with them. Krieger would be my second choice. I can live with the slow twist if I have to. We think alike. I put in a .300" freebore and 1.5 degree angle of repose on anything over .375. I will probably have Greg Tannel straighten any wayward actions to start with. This neck of Idaho is hurting for decent gunsmiths. I might try Mr. Olsen over in Montana. Are you dialing back on the medicine slog yet? If you ever pass through Idaho, I will teach you how to cast a fly.

Give Wayne at AHR a call. He just finished a M70 404 Jeffery for me and it is outstanding.

Cool. I just bought a take off stock for a CZ Magnum from him. Why would anybody swipe my stock but leave the Riby barreled action????? Wayne is easy to deal with. Thanks for the lead.

I would suggest Mark Penrod. He does excellent work and is great to deal with.

Thanks for that pointer. Mark certainly knows how to make a Winchester sing.

I agree, Mark Penrod is excellent, I would go with a Lothar Walther barrel every time. Ray Atkinson Atkinson Hunting Adventures 10 Ward Lane, Filer, Idaho, 83328 208-731-4120 rayatkinsonhunting@gmail.com
