I know this might be better suited for the Re-loading forum, but this is where those who shoot this caliber hangout.
I have my order in for a Searcy in 470 and am puting together the reloading equipment.
My first question(s) is the lenght of the brass. The Norma brass I purchased measures 3.236. The Barnes loading manual recommends triming to 3.150. If it's a 470 3.250 what is the correct length? bewildered
My next questions are about cast bullets. I would like to reload cast bullets at a reduced velocity. I'm not sure I want to start casting bullets for a new hobby, but would like to use a 500 gr. bullet, keeping as near in weight to jacketed hunting ammo like the Woodleighs. I found that Western bullet in MT. is sellling a 500 gr. bullet from the RCBS mould. I called and found that this is not a gas checked bullet. Would a gas check be necessary with this bullet? Are there any other commercial companys selling a 500 gr cast bullet for the 470?, and who are they?
I would also like to get any load data any one would be willing to share for reduced loads and how they worked in your gun.
Thanks

1. A gas check is NOT necessary when shooting reduced loads with a cast bullet in the .470 NE.

2. Wayne Doudna makes a bullet suitable for the 470. http://www.customcastbullets.com/ If you don't like the bullets that he has, he will get a new mold if you place a minimum order.

3. My favorite .470 NE cast load is:

500 grain cast lead, 45.0 grains XMP5744 powder, F215 primer, NO FILLER

To get a load that regulates in your rifle, start at 30 grains and work up in 5 grain increments up to not more than 60 or 70 grains.

Thanks for the info.
I take it that XMP5744 is the Accurate powder. Have they dropped the XMP off the name?, as all I see on the shelves is 5744.
