What Length of Pull for 375 H&H? Login/Join

Having found a BRNO 602 (375 H&H) where the length of pull seems too long for me, I'm curious what others might find to be about the right length.

The measured distance from trigger to rear of the CZ recoil pad is 14.5 inches.

Any thought on what a 375 stock should measure for a normal sized guy?

Here a pretty good explanation of how to check your "LOP"

quote:
The "rule of thumb" for length of pull is to place the rifle/shotgun on your shooting forearm (arm extended with palm up), place the finger on the trigger and see if the butt snuggles against the upright portion of the upper arm just above the elbow. The butt should lay in the crook of the arm just touching the upper arm. This is considered your personal "length of pull".

How much clothing will you be wearing? What is your size? How heavy are you ? Arm lenght?

All of the above, determine YOUR LOP Caliber of the rifle has little if any thing to do with it.

My CZ 550 in 375 H&H American Safari Classic measured out to be 13.5" LOP. My needed LOP is 14.5" I already had a 1" thick Decelerator recoil pad on it and it didn't want to add a 1" spacer. It didn't bother me too much, but when I had it rebarreled to 500 Jeffery I became concerned that my Leupold 1.5 - 5x scope would have to be surgically removed from my forehead. I solved that problem by buying a Limbsaver slip on recoil pad. So now it fits me, I have essentially a 2" thick recoil pad and the gun is a pleasure to shoot offhand.

I like somewhere in the neighborhood of 14 - 14.25 inches LOP. I've had spacers and/or longer recoil pads added to accommodate me. If you give one of my rifles to my girlfriend to shoot, she can't even begin to shoulder it since her arms don't reach that far. Her LOP is around 11.5 inches (she's really short).

The unfortunate thing with factory rifles is the LOP is usually set for the average customer (which seems like 13.5 - 13.75 as the norm). If you're taller (like me) or shorter (like my girlfriend) than average, well ... average LOP just doesn't cut it. Easiest thing to do, find the LOP that fits you and adjust the stock accordingly.

Well stated. I live in the land of the "vertically challenged" (everybody here is generally shorter than your average American). I'm 6',2" with normal corrosponding reach. I have had the length of all my shotguns and rifles lengthened by a good stock man or adjusted by using slip on pad until I could get it done properly.

Length of pull is very individual. I know a guy who is almost my height but outweighs me by about a hundred pounds. Due to the girth of his chest and shoulders, his LOP is much shorter than mine.

Best advice; get fitted by a compentent shop/gunsmith. You won't regret it. tu2

I'm 6'-1" and like a 13.5 LOP but my .375 H&H I built 1/2" longer to help keep that scope a bit farther from my eye.

If the gun is to not have a scope then I'd make it the same as the others....13.5"

I want to provide at least 12.5" from the ocular ring of the scope to heel of the stock, i.e. to the back upper end of the recoil pad. The weatherby Kiss is no fun, I'm told.

LOP depends on several factors. Most have been mentioned above. In addition, how do you mount the gun? This will play a part in the angle at which the stock is cut. This can significantly affect felt recoil. Good advice: See a competent gunsmith for a fitting.

I'm 6 feet and I'm fine with factory pulls. When I have a stock put together it's 14".

Thanks Peter, it shoots good too! I have two mercury recoil reducers in it and with the limbsaver slip on recoil pad, it's actually pleasant to shoot offhand.
