I've heard the whitworths(and we wont get into where they were made)benefit from an extra recoil lug under the barrel,just ahaead of the receiver..Whats the poop?????will it split the wood if I dont? folks must have a reason for doing it

yes, things benefit from a lug... especially big stuff... improperly bedded, it could be bad

Yes, but if its a factory rifle....

Unless your really going to up the horsepower to a Lott or something similar, the standard MK X 375/458 function fine just the way they came from the plant. And a lug isn't going to make it more accurate, either.
Even more true in a high quality synthetic. My 416 Rem Mag works just fine without a barrel lug.

My Whitworth 375 (used) came with a lug installed. Anybody know if some of these came with lugs from the factory or if it was added later (along with the magnaports I had cut off) Bob

My first MkX 458 came without a lug on the barrel but I have since picked up both 375 and 458 barreled actions with additional factory installed lugs on the barrel.
In the original factory stocks the lugs were needed as most , especially 458's, tended to start splitting even with the additional lugs unless they were re-bedded.

My .375 had a factory secodn lug, and it split the stock anyway. The bedding was not too great, plus the "cross bolts" were actually just bolt heads inletted in the stock for cosmetic purposes. Yes, that is right, the "bolts" were purely a placebo! Defintely bed the rifle before shooting

One lug or two they have to be bedded properly...I use two lugs on 458 Win and up..Not on a 375 or 416 as they work fine when properly bedded, perhaps cross bolted,

I do like to glass any 375 or 416 and add cross bolts, just for that extra measure of safety....

They came both ways and I'm guessing here but I think the all Whitworths had lugs but some MK Xs did and some didn't.

Agreed. All the Whitworth Mark X's that I have had in .375 H&H and .458 WM had nicely done recoil lugs on the barrel and these were glass bedded from the factory, with what looked like Devcon or JB Weld dark gray epoxy.

I have also bought barreled action .458 Win Mag Mark X's that were slick barreled, no stock either.

If the rifle under question has no recoil lug on the barrel, then it is not a Whitworth Express Rifle like any I have ever seen. They came in .375 H&H and .458 Win Mag only.

There were some other Mark X's like the "Alaskan," etc.

I would not take Ray's comment to mean two recoil lugs on the barrel, just the primary action lug and a secondary on the barrel. Seems plain as mud to me, but you could misinterpret it.

One in 458 needs mercury recoil reducer and Limb Saver pad.
