Mbwasana,

"Butch told me that one of the problems with the field grade was the forearm springs were weak and collapsing. That was supposed to be taken care of in the new PH model"

Please explain to me what the function of the forearm springs are and what the symptom of their collapse is.

I also have a .470 Field Grade gun and just want to make sure I watch for the problem.

Thank you VERY much.

Well, well, more inuendo! Perhaps even a Holland will double when a nervous client's finger slips onto the second trigger!! ...but shipping it back to london to save face? Tsk, tsk...!

???

Did you see the rifle in order to conclude that the problem was the way the client handled it instead of a rifle problem? The PH I spoke to was convinced the problem was with the rifle. In the pursuit of a nice trigger pull, a double can be set up so that it doubles unfortunately.

Alf,

Without any substantive detail it is difficult to judge the credability of the negative comments you heard. For all we know, the two rifles you saw were in the shop to get their front sight beads replaced.
With regard to H&H, I regard everything I hear from them as completely suspect. Their two new DG cartridges are inferior to many offerings already on the market. And I talked to a PH who guided a bull elephant hunt for a client with a new H&H 470 double. The client had shot his gun at the range with no problems. When he pointed it at the elephant's head, the rifle doubled. Needless to say, the client was none too thrilled, and planned to ship the rifle back to London.
