Gents,
After much internal and external debates I have decided on my next rifle. The .510 Wells. I have already notified my 'smith and he has agreed to the project. The rifle will utilize a P-14 Remington action I already have, A Pac-Nor CM barrel,Timney trigger,,,Express sights here, with a scope fitted later. I expect this project will take me into next year going by my experience with my 416 Rem. I am Extremely Pleased with my 416,,,Basically the same details there....Pac-Nor is not fast but they do produce 1st Quality work.My 'Smith works along the same lines with a project of this potential. I will commence building up my supplies of 460 brass, ammo components, glass and wood, dies and intestinal fortitude... Anybody have any special knowledge they care to share here would be welcome. If I ever draw a tag to Jurassic Park I plan to be ready [Razz] 45nut

45nut,
The 510 Wells is an excellent maximum useful stopping rifle, for most mere mortals. With a little bit longer neck and a little less case capacity than the 500 A-Square, it is a great cartridge. With it, you can duplicate or exceed the ballistics that Nickudu limits his 505 Gibbs too for cooking buffalo well done.

I used a 500 A-Square with a slightly different shoulder angle and a custom throat, and called it the 510 JAB, or .510/460 Weatherby Improved Jenkins And Berry. This is fully spelled out on the barrel engraving, so it partially matches the 460 Wby brass. [Wink]

Norma brass in the form of 460 Weatherby is great.

Your rifle can be used with express sights and hunting bullets, or put a mil dot scope on it, a muzzle brake, and use milsurp bullets, and you have a baby BMG good for accurate shooting at 1000 yards. You could make it weigh as light as 10 pounds in hunting mode, or 13 lbs in anti-materiale mode, and be very practical, IMHO.

A most adaptable rifle: 510 Wells, 500 A2, 50 Peacekeeper, 510 JAB [Wink] ... they are all more of the same.

FWIW- I would have suggested the 500 A2 rather than the .510wells. The .500A2 is a bit more standardized and has a slight case capacity advantage. As you are undoubtably aware, the Remington P-14 actions were heat treated in a manner that has resulted in a number of documented failures. I would have your gunsmith have the action carefully evaluated and/or re- heat treated before proceeding.-Rob

The .500 A2,.510wells and .50 Peacekeeper are all based on the 460WBY case. The peacekeeper was designed using a much shorter case length as they were trying for a sub-sonic MOA capable .50 design.
The trick with any of these cartridges is to throat the chamber to accept 650 gr .50 BMG bullets. This is loads of fun and with 55 grs of XMP5744 you can shoot those cheap military pulls with relatively light recoil. My 500A2 was designed this way and will still shoot 570 gr woodleighs for hunting!-Rob

Gents,
I was leaning toward the Peacekeeper or the 500-A2 but feel the Wells will do everything I might ask of it. And the title ".510 Wells Express" sure does have a ring to it. I have discussed the BMG bullet throat to my 'smith already and he has done plenty of my rifles per my specifications already and that is a given. I will try cast bullets also. My "need" for this rifle is for the day far off when I win the lottery and get to hunt Jurassic Park so speed in completion is not an issue. My Africa rifles I have already...45nut

RGB,
You made a booboo. Fifty lashes with a wet noodle! The 50 Peacekeeper is the full length 460 Wby case, simply necked up with no other changes, according to COTW. The 500 Whisper is the subsonic stubby. Both are by JDJ at SSK.

They claim 2205 fps with a 23" barrel for the 750 grain A-Max in the 50 Peacekeeper. That will be supersonic at 1000 yards.

The 500 A-Square will do the same as the 50 Peacekeeper and more, no doubt, as does my 510 JAB. [Wink]

JDJ at SSK will make all kinds of gobbledygook claims for the 50 Peacekeeper, but it is really just a ploy to avoid calling his cartridge a 510 Wells Express or a 500 A-Square or a 510 JAB [Wink] all of which came before the 50 Peacekeper. Hey, come to think of it, I did the same thing just to keep from calling mine a 500 A-Square. And Art Alphin did the same to keep from calling his a 510 Wells Express ... this and that a smidgeon different and presto-change-o, a new cartridge! [Roll Eyes]

Well, I am coming clean. There is no significant difference between the 510 JAB and the 500 A-Square. [Embarrassed] [Wink]

Gents,
How about some load data ? consider the 647gr Speer and fmj pulls....oh and the hornady vmax. And who offers the best deal on 460 Weatherby brass ? Local gunstore's asking $45.00 for 20 unprimed brass. Is there any cheaper out there ?Primers ? As I have a sizeable amount of Rem 9 1/2 mag primers I would like confirmation these are a good choice. They always make my 416 go bang but we are considerably increasing the powder charges here. Oh and I had not heard of suspect Remington actions....would magnafluxing the action reveal problems if present ? TIA 45nut

Gents,
Seems after a fruitless search locating Dies may be a problem. Where have you procured them for your rifles ? Could I just have my 'smith ream out a 50 cal throat in some 46o dies ? Need to start this process soon if anything is to get done.I talked to a fellow shooter about this project and he has flat refused to even try it once. Claims his -06 is bigger than reasonable though he has a .338 for elk. What a hypocrite.

45nut,

It does not matter what your buddy says, just have one built, even just for the heck of it. As for your dies, either CH4D or RCBS custom shop should be able to help you out. If you got the money then anything is possible. Of course, I am talking about rifle stuff here. Have fun and good luck. Cheers! Ming
