My first rifle I had custom built was a .375 H&H. It was a dream I had since I was a little boy. I already had a 30-06 Bruno de lux that my dad gave me when I was 13 years old. I figured with these two rifles I would be able to hunt just about anything.

I did not have much money to put the 375 together so I used a standard Mauser action and had the box extended and all the relevant ajustments made to fit the H&H cartridge.

With the gun laws in SA there are very few people that do "Wild cat" development and were therefore unaware of the .375-06.

I do not know much about the 375-06 but if the following are true what I gathered from the little research I have done on it, my dreams are shattered!

- .375-06 can be built on a standard mauser action with very little gunsmithing
- It shoots a 300gr bullet at 2300 fps only 200 slower than the 375 H&H
- Standard 30-06 cases can be used to form the cases of which I have more than a thousand (ssshhh I think it is illegal to have that much...or is it? who knows.....)

Can some one please confirm if the above is true?
Does any one have first hand experience with the 375-06 cartridge?

Your best coise is to go for the .375 Whelen Improoved, or the .375 Hawk-Scowill.
The first being the .375-06 with blown out body and 40 degree shoulder, the latter the 9,3x62 opened up to .375. Both will give you close to 2300 with a 300 grs bullet. I do not think a standard .375-06 will reach more than 2150 with a 300 grs bullet, having aboth 5% less volume.

You can get close to 2400 fps with 300 gr. bullets in a 9.3x62, a "standardized" cartridge. Why fool with a 375-06?

Bent, the Syeyr has been around for years, is a great cart. but would require some bolt face work as will the theoretical 375 Ruger. Since you're talking about coming up with a wildcat reamer I assume opening a bolt face is not a deal killer. The 376 Steyr is standardized with fact. ammo available, close to the H&H, brass is cheap as are dies.
I have a 375 Whelen Improved and love it (260's to 2550+). It functions no prob. from a bone stock mil surplus M98. Ballistically, its got nothing over the 9.3x62, if where you live that is readily available, do with it. If you want to use the 06 brass you have and have a surplus M98 and 375 barrel, the 375 Whelen AI is great. Dies will run $100, reamers are everywhere.

But wait a second.....it's late breaking news but Hornady has announced the .375 Ruger....a beltless .375 Taylor that will duplicate (for all practical purposes) the .375 H*H in a standard length action. This too can be fit into a standard mauser action.

Other than that Will's comments ring very true. The .375-06 is not a good choice beside the 9.3 X 62.

Mmmm, I don't think is a stupid idea..why?

We need another 375 ? no we don't but with all those Taylors around, with the 9,3 not being legal for DG in many countries, with a lot of people like me that prefer a lighter rifle in a mauser 98 standard action and just because I don't like the name 376 Steyr, this idea has a lot of sense.

What we really need is a +40 caliber factory DG cartridge that fits in my left handed Ruger magnum action. (Blatant self-interest)
