How you fixed for powder and primers. Don't want to see the lab shut down for lack of supplies!

Dave

I did the hydros in .458.... That data can be downloaded here.....

And also with .474 caliber here.......

Thanks.

Dave

All this is in the Marlins, I tried from 48-50 grs of RL 7, 50/RL 7 was too much, starting to get really sticky in the Marlins. 49/RL 7 was giving 1941 fps, 48/RL 7 giving steady 1870 +. I went with the 48/RL 7. With the 370 NOnCon, same story 48-50, with none of them giving any issues, weight equal pressure, at 50 I was getting 1993 fps, but like 49/RL 7 a bit better at 1941..... In 45/70 I really like the way RL 7 performs. Been using it for years......

Thanks Michael....

I am going to have to give RL7 a try. In my 450 Marlin BLR with a 20 inch barrel I am getting 1887 fps with 47.5 grains of AA1680 and a 400 grain BBW#13. The extreme spread was 22 fps. This helps.

I am going to order some 370 grain non cons to see if I can get them shooting to the same POI.

I am really anxious to hear about your trip to Africa with your 50 B&M Alaskan. I have a number of doubles and large bore bolt rifles but I think a lever gun hunt in Africa would be super cool. These new bullets really make the lever guns so much more lethal.

Michael posted some pictures of various bullets in the most recent "Question for Michael" thread and Tanz just posted some pictures of some Barnes TSX bullets in the "Terminal Bullet Performance" thread. For me, this raised the question as to why even bother with lead core bullets for hunting DG anymore? The Swift is sure a great bullet and so is the conventional lead core Woodleigh. However, the Woodleigh Hydro, North Fork Cup Point, Barnes TSX, and CEB non con will do as much damage and give you much greater penetration then even the finest lead core bullet. Michael loaded some 45/70 ammo for a guy who took it to Africa and put down a buff with a with a single 400 grain BBW#13. Michael plans to go to Africa with 50 B&M Alaskan and I have no doubt that the 405 grain BBW%13 will shoot clean through most any buffalo from most any angle. I am a great fan of the Barnes Buster for lever guns here in North America. However, if I was heading to Africa to hunt DG, I am hard pressed to think of a reason to take a lead core bullet. Stick a Woodleigh Hydro, Barnes TSX, NF cup point, or CEB non con in the chamber and some BBW#13s in the magazine sounds pretty good to me.

I know that your are planning on taking your 50 B&M Alaskan with you on your next trip to Africa. If you intend to use it on Cape Buffalo, what weight and type of bullet do you have in mind? If you are going to use CEB bullets, do you think the 405 grain solid and 365 grain non con will be heavy enough?

I love lever guns so I am really anxious to see how your hunt turns out. When you get back, if you decide to sell that lovely model 71, can I get first dibs?

Dave

And there are many more........... Dave was very interested in my last year hunt with the 50 B&M Alaskan lever gun, as you can see. I did not recall any comments from Dave after I returned and posted...... I have been going back over that and can't find any either, I suppose at that time Dave was not doing so well................ I don't see but a few posts after I returned in August that Dave had made, I am afraid he did not see how the lever gun did..... or missed it......

I enjoyed many a good conversation with Dave, and I will miss him and think of him often.........

Back in June Sam sold a M92 to Dave in 44 mag... Dave was a happy man that week......

Boy-oh-boy, did I ever have a great week. First thing was worked out a deal with srose for a model 92 Winchester (Browning) in 44 mag which I picked up on Monday. Even managed to pick up some ammo.

Second thing, got a prosthesis for my left leg (BTK). I have been without a left leg since the end of October. Haven't pulled a trigger in almost eight months. Have to work into it slowly. Still using a walker. More rehab but I'm betting I am going to be walking in July. Sam, I am going to give that 92 a good workout. Big Grin

Have not had the pleasure of meeting Sam in person. He knew I was looking for a 92 from my posts in the lever rifle forum and he had one to sell. He is one of the good guys.

Guys, thank you so much for all your support. AR is kinda like a family. Give me a few months and I will be back on my feet again. Geez, I really need to pull a trigger..LOLOL

After eight long months, I finally managed to get to the range today with that neat little Model 92 that I got from Sam. What a nice gun. If I ever go deer hunting again along the river, that's going to be my shooter. I know that as most guys get older, they make greater use of optics. However, my eyes are still pretty good and I sure love shooting iron sights at short distances but a good scope is a must in the sandhills.

I was able to do it all without my cane, even on the uneven ground. Biebs has me signed up for dancing with the stars. Wink

It was in the lower 90s here today and a bit windy so I only shot about 20 rounds. Nobody else was there. Too hot for everybody else I guess. I got really tired so I had to quit but golly was it ever nice to pull a trigger.

Dave

I am glad to see he got some shooting in...................

Dave, your AR Family is thinking of you, and we are at a loss........
