Hammer511 Thumper
Know folks have played with the WSM opened to 458.
Has anyone played with the WSSM opened to 511 ?
Could put 40 - 45 grains of powder behind a 700 grain bullet. In a 16-inch barrel might be fun.

jeffeossowhy stop with the wsm? why not for to a 2.55" case? it probably won't work in a .510 or even a .500

HammerFrom the
Hornady Handbook Sixth Edition...
A 458 Lott has an external case mouth diameter of 484. With a 458 diameter bullet that leaves 026 case wall thickness.
A 223 WSSM has a shoulder diameter of 544. Subtracting the 511 bullet and the 026 wall thickness leaves a total shoulder of 007. And that's before it's Ackley Improved. How much you want ?
Besides, the 45 ACP and 500 AE headspace off the mouth.
OK, so we'll use 500 diameter bullets instead of 511.

jeffeossoHammer,
lott headspaces off the belt, wsm off the shoulder (it aint got a belt) ..
your headspace in a .500 bullet would be .011 or so, for a "shoulder", which there is no belt.
the 411 hawk might can get away with it..
and a range-use only rifle might work.
but a general purpose rifle, especially a DGR, this would be more dicey than I would be work with

GrandpasezIffy headspace can get challenging.
Firing pin falls, case gives a little,
no boom, set gun down, goes off maybe, or opening bolt goes off,or just sets there
with all the uncertainty.To scary.Ed

HammerGuess will go with a shortened 460 Wby or 585 Nyati case then.
