Has anyone chronographed new 460 Weatherby ammo from Weatherby?
450gr Barnes x = 2660fps
500gr = 2600

Just wondering if this close to actual velocity or not?

For the price of a box of ammo one can afford a crony.

They are very useful item for one to own, Each rifle is a bit different the one way to know what your rifle is doing it to shoot the load over a crony.

My understanding was the speeds were lawyered down, kicked too much for some, i read this in guns and ammo 2007 edition had a profile of 460wby load data, was a good article.

p dog shooter,
My rifle will have the iron sights regulated for factory ammo load. I wanted to know if factory ammo does indeed shoot as advertised, as advertised ballistics have been known to be some what inflated. If it does then I'd probably have ammo loaded to 2400-2450fps and the sights regulated as such.
Many thanks

cc,
Thanks for the info.

It could shoot as advertised in the test rifle but not in yours. Thus unless you shoot it over crony in your rifle you well never know for sure.

I have shot thousands of rounds over a crony very few rifles have the same vel as another.

Years ago a friend and serious shooter told me that once you buy a chronograph you will quickly loose most of your Weatherby friends.

Best I ever saw was 2550fps but with 0.003 belt expansion in my Weatherby 460 with 500 gr bullets . That was with s compressed load of 4350 and a 500 gr bullet. -Rob

Isn't there an RL19 load in the Barnes manual which is a little quicker? Don't have the manual here but doubt Barnes would have printed an untested load. Another possible cause of the discrepancy might be the difference in barrel length, with newer WBY's having a 26" pipe. Paso Robles can be hot as hell in the Summer too.

I heard a funny story about 35+ years ago by a barrelmaker in Montana I visited; about at least one of the Wby cartridges velocity.

He had made a barrel with rifling about one-thousandth of inch deep, and a twist rate (1:52")that worked out to be about half a turn in a twenty-six barrel for some company.

When questioned about it, the company was alleged to have responded "we never said anything about barrel specs...".

The factory loaded 500 gr rnsp chronographed 2555 fps average and the 500 gr fmj 2565 fps averaged out of my Mark V DGR with a 24 inch barrel. I haven't tried the 450 gr TSX load. I reload the 500 gr TSX to 2400 fps, and it will shoot to the same POI as the two factory 500 gr loads.

Factory ammo from my 24" MK V runs at 2550 fps, 500 gr. SP or FMJ.

My handloads are 115 gr. of IMR 4350, neck sized case and 500 gr. Hornady FMJ cheapies. They run at 2410 fps, +- 10 fps.

The 115 grains of IMR 4350 has given me an average of 2500 with 500 grain Hornady and across a range of rifle aqnd all with the Pendleton Dekicker, so 23" barrel.

Robgunbuilder says he was getting .003 belt expansion at 2550...Wow!!!!. I wonder if he was measuring the full belt as the solid head on Wby brass does not extend as far up as the top of the belt.

That load was suggested by Ross Seyfried a while back. I get good load density and very consistent performance, truly +- 10 fps with those 500 gr. Hornady pills.

I was using an older Barnes reloading manual and was having trouble seating their monolithic solids down to the cannelure with some of the loads there. I contacted them and they suggested switching to IMR 4831. Their solids are quite long compared to lead core bullets. The 500 gr. Speer AGS solids are quite short and easy to load.

I recently bought one hundred 300 gr. and one hundred 405 gr. jacketed soft points made by a company called Alpha LaFranck which I presume is now defunct. I'll see what I can do with those one of these days

I heard this a lot. I have only a few Weatherby calibres at this time, but I've found the factory ammo (of which I have even less) thusfar to be spot on with the claims. I was very pleasantly surprised. This does not realte to the 460 Wby.
