What would be involved in converting a Ruger No. 1H in .458 Win Mag to .470 Capstick. Can I keep the same barrel or will it require a new barrel? Thanks. "Big ears doesn't make you a good listener, but big feet will tell on you." - Mr. Bill Clinton

Ross Seyfried had a .458 No. 1 rebored and chambered for the 470 Nitro...sine they use the same bullet diameter, I think you could do the same with the Capstick. You wouldn't have to modify the extractor or anything else. There are a couple of places that do rebores and I think they charge around $300...about half the price of a rebarrel.

As congomike said, your .458 can be re-bored and rechambered. I'd skip the project altogether or rechamber to .450 Nitro Express. The .470 Capstick is designed to propel 500gr. bullets at ~2400fps. My M-70 .470 Capstick weighs 10.75lbs. and recoil is brisk. How much do you think your 9lb. #1 will kick? George

Thanks Congomike and GeorgeS. I would really like to do the .470 Capstick. I have a Win 70 in .470 Capstick so I have brass and bullets. My cousin would load these for me as I don't reload. He mentioned that he could load some "sissy" rounds using pistol bullets and "stump-jerkers" using rifle bullets. Sounds like this could be an all around caliber and be unique at the same time. I know this rifle will kick, because it jars me with the .458 Win Mag. It is a stock rifle so there are some things I could to tame some of the recoil. I didn't realize you were familiar with the .470 Capstick's recoil. Have at it! Reboring can take a long time, as there are only a few shops that perform this service, and they have a large backlog. Consider having Pac-Nor rebarrel the gun for you. George

I shot a friends 470 capstick this summer with 500 and 600 gr loads.I shot my 416 rem mag with 410 gr bullets at 2400 fps.The 416 kicked like 20 ga heavy dove loads. The 470 capstick kicked like a light 10 ga with 2 1/4 oz loads. Its a big difference.I shot my 416 a bunch.I shot the 470 only a few times.I did like it and think its the next step above a 416 I will take unless I build a 50 cal peacekeeper which is a 460 weatherby necked to .510.I have a ton of 416 rem mag brass whick converts by necking up or fireforming to 470 capstick nicely.I just saw a 470 capstick on gunsamerica but its gone now.I do like that caliber.

I don't blame you; it's a lot of sturm und drang, but that helps clear the benches on either side of me at the range. George

I would want an awesome muzzle break on a 470 capstick .I think it should be a factory chambering. You use to be able to get model 70 470 capsticks from Winchester.I wonder what they will chamber in the new model 70s as far as big Rifles.I have only seen two 470 chapsticks so far my friends stainless model 70 and the Big Five one on Guns America. It is a hard hitter at both ends for sure.It puts the 458 behind it and probally the 458 lott.
