I was talking whit two moose hunters and they said this, "If a bear are running at you and you shoot the bear in the front of the chest whit a 6,5 x 55 then the bear will maybe die but it is still running at you,but if you shoot the same shoot whit a 460 wby and all the energy of the bullet stay in the bear, then the bear is going to stopp runing."

I dont know if they talk the true but this two hunters have hunting in 30 years.

I bet they never shot a charging bear with either a 6.5x55 or a 460. The theory about "energy staying in the bear" is bunk.

Give us Swedes some more credit, George

The incessant ranting by Overkill is NOT representative for us at all.(Overkill, why do you insist on doing this?)

Personally I've found this forum to be a very good source of all sorts of valuable information and also a welcoming place for me as a hunter/shooter with an interest in exchanging general thoughts and ideas. I hope we can keep it that way for our mutual good.

With a special thanks to our good host Saeed,

Well, there are a LOT of Swedes on this board, and most of us have been staying away from Overkill's posts for the same reason as you. Either he is still wet behind the ears, or he is having fun with our replies to his trolling... :-)

As far as experience goes, there are professional moose hunters in Sweden who have shot thousands of moose. I'm sure a few of them might even share Overkill's naive understanding of physics. :-)

George Hoffman,

I'm not Swedish, but you can find persons like Overkill in all other countries. One guy like him by country is ENOUGH. Sweden has Overkill. If nobody answered to Overkill's posts, Overkill'd leave this forum. But he is still here.

My guess is that Overkill isnt exactly one of the older hunters on this board. Cant blame a youngster for asking a lot of questions but this has gone far enough.
Would be nice if he had any other topics of interrest.
And like the man said, dont judge us swedes, they are everywhere.

Just out of curiosity...has Overkill responded in Swedish to any of the Swedish comments or inquiries directed his way by his countrymen? Take this as a preemptive apology to all the true Swedes on this forum from an American with suspicions.

Harald,
I believe you're correct. All the rest of our Swedish friend's English doesn't sound like it came off of a bad American sitcom like Overwhatever's. My guess............
ignore him and he'll go away.

Saeed has a classy site that the vast majority of the members respect and appreciate. I've hunted for 40 years, all over North America, and learn something new here all of the time from many of the fine posters on this site. Then, again, Overwhatever and his ilk do serve a purpose;
they remind us how much we appreciate having a majority of members that we can exchange information and ideas with knowing it is from
a solid source.

Thanking you all, especially Saeed,
I remain,

I have been reading Overkills questions with a sort of facinating, unbeliving bevilderment. He is a real Sweede, I saw him reply to Fritz (I think in) Swedish.

To stand up for my next door neighbors, the Sweedes are among other thing, renovned moose hunters, the moose beeing THE big game there. And belive me, they know how to hunt !!

They have as us Norwegians and the Finns, a continuing tradition of big game hunting since the first raindeer hunters followed the melting ice after the last ice age 10.000 years ago.

At least Overkill ask polite questions.
I remember an American, our old fella Cody, who used to gave us quite a bashing.
You find them everywhere I guess.

Min vn,

P femtio meters hll r du nere p c:a 800 m/s och c:a 10000 Joule.

Vnliga hlsningar,

-- Mats B. Johansson, Ume

Tjena John!

No need for apologies, your svenska is fine. With regards to the original poster my guess is that he's young. I don't think he's stupid or a troll, he just haven't been there and done that. Yet.

We've all been lesser knowing, we've all been easily affected by people we thought knew... I've learned new things every single day of my life and I will continue to do so until the day I cease to be - having a job like mine (at Clas Ohlson) just makes it easier.

With the wealth of knowledge accessible on this board I'm sure that our young Swedish friend will become a good hunter someday. Until then, and after that, he'll have some questions to ask.

My best to you,

-- Mats

I didn't see anything wrong either. And I firmly believe in being nice to people until they have proven, beyond any reasonable doubt, that they are not worthy of such treatment.

So I just posted a reply, plain and simple.

Arild,

I cant remember that he has replied to me in Swedish. The only time Ive used another language than English here was two post in German, when I had some strong feelings. But thats long ago.

And I think its time to leave Overkill now. He has get so much critics for his unlucky posting, that he will never come back. Poor youngster!

Well here is a bear story for ya!

This bear was killed by an airman from Elmendorf AFB on Hitchenbrook Island.

The bear stood 12' 6" and estimated over 1600lbs. The airman was walking to his hunting area and the bear stood up only 35 yards away. The bear dropped down and charged straight for the Airman. He unloaded his rifle and the bear fell 10 yards from him.

I actually kind of enjoy some of Overkill's posts. Sure, they're silly to the Nth degree, but so far I haven't seen him post anything that leads me to think he's some kind of anti-hunter or gun control nut. I think he's just having a little fun and trying to see what kind of reaction he can get out of his posts. I've gotten chuckles out of quite a few of them.

Carl:
I'll settle for the video. Please have someone film you shooting a charging grizzly at point blank range. I'll pay for the shipping, too.

Rick.

P.S. 3 yards doesn't count. It must be at "point blank range".

Gentlemen
I have shot bears in Alaska and canada with the .270 .338 and 416 none of which died in their tracks, none was flipped over. Bears will often roll or jump when first hit, but unless major bone or spine is hit bears will not flip over from sheer bullet impact.

Mats,

If the bear will stopp of 17 000 joule/13 000 foot pounds,of energy as you say then a 700 Nitro express will stop a bear.

Isnt that right....?

Overkill,

Energy does not kill.

Holes in vital organs kill. Breaks in the spinal cord from the neck up and holes in the brain kill.

Big holes in vital organs kill quicker than small holes.

There are 2 ways to stop a charging bear:

1. Nervous system shutdown, such as brain shot or high spine shot (forward of shoulders).

2. Vital organ shot which causes system wide organ shutdown. Examples, heart shot (bleeding, loss of blood pressure to brain, death), or lung shot (lungs fill with blood, oxygen supply in blood is not replenished, brain death).

Almost any centerfire round can achieve No. 1.

Bigger bullets achieve #2 quicker than smaller bullets.

Seeing how no more than 10 % of the energy, at the most, is released lengthwise in the animal, and how a .700 Nitro would probably penetrate all the way through anyway - no, that is not right.
