JOE MACKDecisions, decisions
I'm going to have a .50 caliber Ruger No.1 built. The problem is, I can't decide on the caliber. I like the performance of the .500Jeffries but by fraggle rock the ammo is expensive. I'd have to get a 5 round pack and reload those until they turned to dust. Then there's the .510Wells, .500NE, and the .500 Alaskan. I'm leaning towards the .500 Alaskan due to component price and availability. I know it'd be good bear, moose, bison, elk, and PG (at medium range) medicine but don't know about African DG at short range. I'm open to (polite) suggestions. Thanks, gents.

MasteriflemanFrom a components standpoint, the Wells would be the cheapest for brass, bullets will be the same regardless.

congomikeMany years ago, when the British NE components were hard to find, I had built a No.1 in 50-3 1/4 Sharps. Was easily able to duplicate .500 3" and components were relatively cheap. As I recall, I used a set of 50-70 dies and adjusted them to work. All in all, did it "on the cheap" so to speak.

.500 Nitro x 3 or 3.25. You can load it up hot enough to knock the pi---- out of you or anything as you have some barrel contour limits and a #1 just plain kicks in my opinion.

Rodney H.{500Jeffery}CongoMike's suggestion is a good one, Just buy 50 basic brass or 50-140 Sharps and duplicate 500 NE loads. There is also the 510 nitro express {510 Echols Express} at 3.245 in length. I prefer the heavy rim on the 50 basic brass better than the 500 Nitro's flanged, either choice would be a good one. Rodney.
