I have a leupold 1.75 x 6 VXIII, I mounted on a Winchester M70 375 h&h. This is the first scope I have ever mounted. I noticed when bore sighting I had to use a lot of up adjustment. When I took it to the range, I was still hitting low and ran out of up adjustment on the scope. I am still 3 inches low at 25 yds. Where do I place shim material and what type of material do you use? Thanks

First, which mounts are you using? Some Winchesters were a little off, resulting in bases not being at the correct height when installed. At least one mount manufacturer had a solution to the problem. George

George, It is the QR detachable rings and bases.

xgrunt, I know Talley had a solution to the problem a couple of years back; they would supply a base to compensate for the problem. Give them a call. George

xgrunt, George is right. I know it may be "inconcievable" and that surely it should be proper from the factory, but it has happened. I had a CZ 550 Safari Magnum that gave me a similar problem and when I contacted Gary at Talley he alluded to "that run of Winchesters" (that George mentioned). I know this just isn't the way it "should be", but it is and with your heavy recoiling rifle you have to have a proper fix to the problem; otherwise the recoil can destroy your scope. The jerry-rigging that you can get away with on small bores just won't cut it here, beware of advice from your smallbore friends who may mean well, but just don't know. ---------------------------------- Never Go Undergunned, Always Check The Sight In, Perform At Show Time. xgrunt: Since you mentioned this is the first scope you have mounted ...it may be worthwhile to have someone else check it over for you... I started mounting my own scope a couple of years ago and it took me a couple of attempts to get it right..since this is a big bore it may be better to have someone look it over..

If you're off 3" at 25 yards this is about 12" at 100 yards and after you've used all your adjustment in the scope......????? Putting a .03 shim somewhere under the front rings or bases will compensate about 18 inches. This is enough to get your problem behind you but hold the fort here charlie That's one helluva long ways off. I can buy left right problems with misaligned drill and taps. I'm betting there's something else wrong here.....or as in the old joke....."someeone else shot that beaver." You have the wrong bases or rings or something else isn't right. /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." Are your rings and bases the same height? As in they are off the rifle and side by side? If so then you may have the wrong model for your rifle. If not I think the tallest goes to the rear. You might just swap them around and see. I have not scoped a mod 70 in 35 years so I do not remember all. Semper Fi WE BAND OF BUBBAS STC Hunting Club

I had a similar problem with that scope and when I called Leupold I was told that magnification scope has less adjustment than the other VX III models. They suggested I use a 1.5x5.5 which I did sucessfully. Makes no sense but it happens.

Thanks for all comments. I bought the leupold QD rings and bases the tek service at leupold suggested for this rifle. I called them and told them what my problem was and their suggestion was to place a shim under the rear base. I intend to call the Talley folks as George suggested.

I replaced the Leupold bases and rings with Talley bases and rings. Problem solved.
