Recommendations for a new .458? Login/Join

Hi all, I'm looking to buy a .458 Winchester Magnum pretty soon. Any recommandations? I've been looking at the CZ-550 Magnum and the Winchester gun. I like the CZ, since it's half the price of the Winchester, but have heard the CZ's are kinda hard to get (according to my dealer, anyway)... [Frown]

Of course, after I get that I'll have to call up A Square and order a .577 T-Rex, since they have the guns, brass, and loaded ammo [Smile]

Thanks in advance for any advice!!

Have you tried www.gunbroker.com and follow through to rifles. Usually there are quite a few listed for $599.00 US.

Glock,
Get the CZ, restock it, have it chambered for the lott, and you are STILL lower is total price then the winchester. I have the win, nice gun,,, the CZ is 4x the value to it's price.

Defintely get the cz !!

Jeffo's advice on my last purchase ensured that I would be a happy camper. You can not beat them for value for money.

Down the track you could easily make a .458 lott from it if you desire (just run the lott reamer up the barrel and check feeding).

But beware, they suck you in with there good prices becasue they know once you buy one cz you will want a dozen more [Smile]

Thanks for the info guys!! I'll definitely get the CZ now. I may eventually get it rechambered for the Lott round, but for now I'll stick with the Win. Mag.

This is just going to be my "starting" gun for big-bore rifles; to date the only rifle I have owned (or shot!) has been a .22!

Should be, um, "interesting" for the first few shots!

At least I'm not starting with the T-Rex [Smile]

Ok guys, thanks oh-so-much for introducing me to www.gunbroker.com...now I'll be spending ALL of my $ there [Smile]

$400 for a Ruger .454 *with* scope?!? Jeez, I paid $635 for mine!

$599 for that CZ is an awesome price, guess I'll be getting that ASAP!

glock,

the stock will be fine if you get it bedded properly etc.

Try the euro hogs back stock before thinking of restocking, you may like it. I do not hate there look at all, just I like composites. But the hogs back stock has grown on me, I like the schnabel forend it feels slim in my hand and swings nicely.

Glock,
the stock is not my preffered, although others here like them I shot a 550(hogback) 416rigby and a 602 "scant" american style stock 458 win yesterday. Both at factory velocities, as the 416 was chrono'ed and the 458 was shooting factory. The 416 had a good deal more felt recoil, even though the gun was much heavier than the 458 should only be 4ft/lbs less recoil. I do'nt think my shoulder can tell 4 ft/lbs at the 70 to 74 range. I'll attribute that to the stock.

But, Mike's 458, which I doubt had 1 full box of shells through as he got like 16 rounds in a partial box, cracked the stock on about the 6th shot yesterday. I looked at closy, and I think the stock is not "hurt" rather the rear tang had a high presure point on the wrist, and it split a couple chips off (and into my thumb!!!)

INNSHO, the 2 short comings of the CZ bigbores (I'll agree with PC on the stocks feeling nice, but those should be 300win) is the stock design and the safety. The safety issue is more of an issue with the 602, as you pull it BACK to shoot. The stock is TOO SHORT for me, without spacers, and it's of the longest "stock" stocks. 14.25 or so says CZ. BTW, the 602 stock was TINY.. Mike's only 6', and he "wiped his nose" on the first shot. I had to play like I was shooting a springfield.

If you want it DONE for you, www.gunstocks.com can do this, broze around the bargin list, and they should have finished stocks and prices near the end. it's not THAT had to do this yourself, btw. In any event, a 458 requires at least one crossbolt.

cheers
jeffe
